Year 3 baby! I’ve survived (just) Black Friday at work and spun out like a MF about my annual mammo. Too many folks to thank for helping me keep my feet firmly on the ground whilst I navigate the limbo between staying positive and abject fear 😰. In the words of JCole, fu***ng love yours! No such thing as a life that’s better than yours. The smallest acts of kindness have meant the world to me this last month. Huge thank you to who’s helped me get some semblance of control this year at the gym and taught me to channel my rage on a punch bag (& not at men! 😂) and introducing me to BJJ. So grateful ☺️

This morning I tried an infared sauna for the first time. I haven’t posted much of late because this year has been tough. Lots of wonderful things happening that I’m grateful for, but felt like I was grieving all the things cancer took away from me. I’ve taken to hibernation and tons of self care stuff like floatation, outdoor saunas and now this. My aim is to calm my nervous system down. Keep letting myself know I’m safe and capable. To anyone struggling, keep going. Cancer doesn’t have to become your whole identity, but it’s okay to acknowledge that you need to take care of yourself in a different way now (still learning). Oh and the last image is to show being stoopid and playful works too and is cheaper! 🤣

Post Chemo hair is growing back curly! Embracing my new mini fro and pairing it with colourful earrings. I’m slowly getting back to myself. The shoulders are coming down, my jaw is less less clenched, the feelings are being felt and I’m starting to look back with awe rather than fear. Rebuilding, recovering and resting. Cancer is fricken awful. I’m looking forward to it being a distant memory, but at the mo it isn’t. Still navigating the changes in energy, physical appearance, relationships, goals and health. I’m getting there with my mini fro, a smile and some fabulous earrings!

Last year, less than 6 months after moving to sunny Brighton, I was diagnosed with stage 1, Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Thankfully it was caught super early due to a health screening I randomly decided to take with a mammogram thrown in. I’ve had scans, biopsies, operations, injections, medications, chemotherapy and recently finished radiotherapy. I tried to practice yoga and meditation throughout and it kept me going. So much so that I wrote a research proposal about stress, cancer and yoga for my MSc dissertation.

Still processing it all and I’m hopeful that I’ll get the all clear in a few months time 🤞. For now here is a post sharing some of the many faces (phases) I’ve travelled through. It’s been a lot. Mostly terrifying, joyful, frustrating and knackering.

What’s on your gratitude list this week?

Mine? Only that’s it coming home and the lads bringing it are the most diverse and inclusive England team we’ve ever experienced. There’s lots said about Southgate being a great leader, one of the things I read was his openness for diverse opinions and an approach to coaching that reflects that. How refreshing. We can sometimes encounter entitled leaders (and colleagues/friends/family) who hide behind their ignorance or base their values on limited experiences often expecting others to adapt. Southgate is a leader that is willing to challenge his own perspective by employing a diverse staff and techniques. This approach seems to be working, we’re in a Final for the first time in some of our lifetimes and with a team that seem in sync and show up as authentically decent humans in their interactions with the fans, media & more importantly on the pitch. Can’t wait to watch the final tonight!

(Fun fact: The England team have been practicing hot yoga. Hey, if it’s good enough to bring it home, then maybe it’s good enough to try a bit of yoga for yourself. 😛)

It’s mental health awareness week this week and so I’ll be posting some practical tips, backed by a bit of neuroscience to help with your mental well-being.

The focus for mental health awareness week is nature. How many of us have explored and enjoyed our natural surroundings recently to help us get through the pandemic? A study published by Nature in 2016 found that greed spaces have a direct impact on mental health, those with access to green spaces were found to have fewer depressive symptoms. Some scientists say it’s because nature gives our brains a break from over stimulation and mental fatigue. Our natural environment is much more in keeping with our evolution than our phones and screens. Whether you’re watering some house plants 🪴 or taking a stroll through a nature reserve, absorbing some nature through your cortex is great for your mental health. If you don’t have a garden, the U.K. has over 62,000 urban green space sites. Let’s play a game! Take a walk around the block and count how many birds, green shoots through pavements or trees you spot. Where your attention goes your energy flows. Happy nature spotting yogis!

It’s a Easter Movement Monday today yogis!
Hopefully you’re getting the chance to chill out and stuff yourself with good food and company. And if it all gets too much, just like in a yoga class, there is always child’s pose.

🐣Little bit like curling up into an Easter egg, child’s pose is a lovely restorative posture and great for opening up the back of your body. If you can’t get your tailbone down to your heels, use a rolled up blanket or cushion as a prop. Head doesn’t go all the way to the ground? No problem, get yourself a cushion or block to put under your head.

🐣start by coming down to the ground, on your knees. Bring them together and your feet together too. You can spread both knees and feet if it’s uncomfortable and place something soft underneath your knees too. If flexing your knees is tough, place a blanket between your calves and thighs for support.

🌸take a big inhale and as you exhale, gently pull your lower abdomen in and fold forward. Take your arms behind you, palms gently resting upwards to enjoy a stretch across the shoulders too.

🐣And breath. Notice how it feels. I used to feel restricted in this posture, curling in can compress the airways. Find props and support to allow the breath to flow and notice if your breathing becomes easier as you go along. Imagine expanding your back and the back of your lungs to help find more space.
Let go, chill, stay as long as you need to and enjoy.

Love! Love! Love!

Love is what you want it to be. It doesn’t have to be what you were taught, it’s possibilities are often a reason to keep going. It can be the hardest, most vulnerable, misunderstood emotional state to express. So keep practicing, it’s a skill that’s in all of us. And we all get it wrong sometimes.

And if no one told you today. I love you. You are loved. Keep going. You have so many unfelt acts of love, yet to be experienced. In the midst of the chaos there are also billions of acts of love. You could be doing one of them ###
