I'm counting an illness as anything that's stopping you from being you...

Things are pretty stressful at the moment and I've had more clients than ever coming in for neck and back pain, and headaches.
I've asked every single one of them how they're feeling - how they're REALLY feeling - and only 1 of them told me they felt stressed.
But 99% of them have also said they've left my clinic feeling 'like a weight has been lifted' or 'lighter' or 'more relaxed'.

If we don't make the time to look after ourselves, it WILL catch up with us eventually, and it can manifest in all kinds of ways; pain, headaches, shortness of temper, irritability, lack of sleep, sleeping more, low mood.

Some people benefit from physio for specific pains, some people benefit from a monthly massage to relax.

Lucky for us, we do both.

Do you?

'I had physio and I was just given a sheet of exercises to do'

This is something that a lot of patients say to me in their first session.
They've had pain, they've been to their GP, they've used Dr Google, they've been referred to physio, they've been given some exercises, theyve tried them for a week or two and then they've given up because 'the exercises weren't working'.

I think it's so important for us to spend some time explaining - and I mean REALLY explaining - why we're prescribing exercises and what changes we expect to see and when.

Whenever I ask a patient if they knew WHY they had been given the specific exercises they had, the answer is usually 'I needed to strengthen my hip/knee/back/➡️insert area of body here⬅️'.
Sure, but WHY do you need to strengthen that area?

As humans we know that if something is weak we need to strengthen it, right?
As physios we work out WHY something is weak - muscles don't just become weak overnight. A true weakness is often caused by the muscle not having to work because another one has taken over and is doing it's job for it.

In my opinion it is our job to give you a clear idea of the bigger picture to understand what is going on. In order for you to understand WHY exercises are the answer, you should have a basic understanding of which muscles aren't doing their jobs and which muscles are doing too much.
When patients begin to understand the WHY, they start to understand the necessity of strengthening exercises.

Often just taking the time to explain can be the difference between patients improving quickly, and patients falling off the bandwagon!
