So many families come to us after trying a big agency and feeling completely let down. This was exactly the case for Mrs Harrison’s family a few months ago.

Their mum has dementia and lives in Bristol. They were using a large national agency, three visits a day, seven days a week. On paper it looked ideal, but in reality it was the opposite. They were promised consistency, but the carers changed constantly. Some days Mum saw three different faces in a week. She never knew who was coming through her door and it left her feeling unsettled and anxious.

When they finally got a small bit of consistency with three carers she recognised and felt comfortable with, the agency moved all three to other clients. Everything they’d just settled into went back to square one.

The family also kept noticing the same pattern. The carers would help Mum get dressed, make breakfast, tick off the tasks, then ask, “Is there anything else you want me to do?”
Mum has dementia. She always said no. So they left. Most visits lasted around thirty minutes, even though they were paying for a full hour.

They complained, but nothing changed. They eventually shortened the visits to match what Mum was actually receiving. The cost barely dropped. They were still paying almost the same for half the time. They needed support, but they didn’t trust anyone anymore.

Then they found us.

They met three of our carers first and chose who felt right for their mum. The carers chose too. Mum now has her own small team who visit on the same days, at the same times, every single week.

They know her routines. They know how she likes her tea. They know she gets anxious if things are rushed. They know the stories she loves to tell. And when the tasks are finished, they don’t wait by the door to leave. They spend time with her. They sit, chat and offer company because that is just as important as getting the jobs done.

The family stay involved, sharing what works best for Mum because they know her better than anyone. And when they need guidance or want to talk something through, we are always at the end of the phone.

Last week her daughter said, “I cannot believe we put up with the other agency for so long. This is what it should have been from the start.”

And the irony? Our hourly rate is still less than what they were paying for those rushed thirty-minute visits.

If you’ve tried a big agency and been let down, we understand. We work completely differently. Call us on 0117 947 7422 or read more about how we support families here:https://www.your-careuk.co.uk/our-services/why-choose-your-care

🌟 Bridging the Gap Between Hospital and Home 🌟

Getting home from hospital should feel hopeful, not stressful.
But the reality is that thousands of people stay in hospital far longer than they need to because the right support is not in place. In December 2022, an average of 13,440 patients per day remained in hospital even though they were ready to leave. It’s a huge rise from the year before and shows just how stretched the system is.

For families, this often means sitting by the bedside feeling stuck. Your loved one is ready to come home, the hospital is asking what support you have in place, and you are left trying to figure everything out with very little guidance. It is overwhelming, especially when you are already tired and worried.

That is where we come in.

At Your Care, we help families bring their loved ones home safely, smoothly and with confidence.

💚 How we make the transition easier
• Personalised support that matches you with self-employed Personal Assistants who fit your needs
• A smoother recovery because people heal better and feel more relaxed in their own home
• Flexible options whether you need short term support or longer term routines
• Peace of mind with guidance from a friendly team who understand how emotional and confusing this stage can be

Choosing Your Care means more than arranging home support. It means giving your loved one the chance to recover in comfort and helping reduce delayed hospital discharges across our community.

📞 If your loved one is ready to come home but you are not sure what to put in place, we can help. Call us on 0117 947 7422 and we will guide you through the next steps.

We all know the phrase “use it or lose it,” and when someone has dementia, it could not be more true. When a person spends long periods sitting, the brain stops sending the small signals that keep muscles working and balance steady. Over time you see more shuffling, more hesitancy and a real loss of confidence.

But the moment you reintroduce gentle, meaningful movement, things begin to change. You see spark, you see purpose and you often see strength returning far quicker than families expect. The brain may be affected by dementia, but the muscles still remember what to do.

At our Living Well Days dementia day centre in Hanham, movement is woven into everything we do. We walk, we play, we cheer each other on and we encourage people at their own pace. It is not about pushing or pressuring. It is about building confidence one small win at a time.

We see this transformation often. Someone who barely moves at home suddenly joins in with activities. Someone who shuffles starts walking a little taller. Someone who has lost confidence finds a bit of themselves again. That is the power of regular, supported movement in a safe, small group.

This is what makes Living Well Days different. The group is small, everyone is noticed and our team understand dementia inside out. We create an environment where people feel safe enough to try, which is often the key to improving mobility and helping people stay at home for longer.

For someone with dementia, staying active is not just helpful. It can be genuinely life changing for both them and their family.

If you would like to see the difference for yourself, we would love to welcome your loved one for a free taster session. You can call us for a chat and we will guide you through everything.

So many families tell us the same thing. They’re doing everything they can for their parent, but they’re exhausted, stretched thin and feel guilty even admitting it.

Sharon felt exactly like this with her mum, Betty. Betty is 84, lives alone and has early dementia. She has always been independent, and every time Sharon gently suggested a bit of help, Betty pushed back. She didn’t want strangers in her home. She worried what people would think. And she didn’t want to feel like a burden.

Meanwhile, Sharon was working, helping with the grandchildren and doing all the shopping, cleaning, meals, bills and appointments for her mum. She loved her, but the pressure was becoming too much.

When she reached out, she knew she couldn’t keep doing everything alone. She wanted advice on what support could realistically look like and how to introduce it gently to her mum.

We talked about the generational differences we see so often, and how starting small can make a huge difference. Calling it home help. Keeping it simple. Framing it as support for the family, not “care”.

Sharon went back to her mum and explained that she was struggling to keep up. Nothing dramatic. Just the truth. She asked if they could try someone coming in for an hour a day, just to help with the bits she couldn’t manage anymore. A short trial, nothing too big.

Betty agreed because she didn’t want her daughter stretched so thin.
Six months on, Betty enjoys her visits with Lucy. They shop together, cook together and keep the house how she likes it. She still feels independent and in control. And Sharon finally has space to breathe and enjoy being her mum’s daughter again.

So many families are in this position. It doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re human, and you’re trying to keep everything going.

If you’re feeling like this and want to understand what support could look like for your parent, call us on 0117 947 7422. We can talk things through and help you take the first small step.

💙 “Mum just isn’t eating like she used to” – how dementia can change appetite
It’s something we hear from families all the time.

Whether it’s forgetting mealtimes, losing interest in food, or saying they’re “not hungry”, changes in eating are incredibly common with dementia.
Sometimes it’s because food doesn’t look familiar anymore.

Other times, it’s down to memory loss, low mood, or even difficulty recognising cutlery.

In After the Diagnosis: Your Guide to Living with Dementia, we talk about why this happens and what families can do to make mealtimes easier. Here’s a short extract:

“If your loved one is eating less, try not to panic - there’s usually a reason behind it. Dementia can affect taste, smell, and the ability to recognise food, which can make meals feel less appealing. Focus on familiarity and routine. Offer the foods they’ve always loved, serve one or two things at a time, and remove distractions so they can concentrate on eating. Try using brightly coloured plates to help the food stand out. And if big meals feel too much, offer small snacks throughout the day instead. The goal isn’t a perfect plate - it’s helping them get enough nutrition in a way that still feels enjoyable.”

The book is full of practical advice just like this – simple, realistic ideas that really work in day-to-day life.

You’ll also learn:
✔ How to spot early signs of dehydration or weight loss
✔ Tips for creating calm, enjoyable mealtimes
✔ Easy swaps and additions to boost calories for those eating less
✔ How to make sure your loved one still enjoys the experience of food

Small changes really can make a big difference.

🌿 Reconnecting Through Sport: Why Staying Active Still Matters After Dementia

At Your Care, we believe that age and dementia should never mean sitting on the sidelines. Every Tuesday from 10am to 2pm at Hanham Community Centre, our dementia day centre comes alive with movement, laughter, and gentle teamwork that spark connection and joy.

For many families, dementia can feel like slowly losing parts of a loved one. But when someone picks up a ball, hears a cheer from a teammate, or spots the colours of an old team jersey, something beautiful happens. They come alive. Memories resurface, smiles return, and a sense of belonging fills the room.

For us, staying active is not about fitness or competition. It is about purpose, confidence, and connection. Gentle movement helps improve mood, coordination, and focus, but most of all it reminds every person that they are seen, valued, and capable.

For families, it brings peace of mind knowing their loved one is not just cared for, but celebrated for who they are today.

At Your Care, we are more than a day centre. We are a community where stories continue, friendships grow, and every person matters every single Tuesday. 💛

If you would like to learn more about our Living Well Days at Hanham Community Centre, or how we can support your loved one, we would love to hear from you.

💛 Call us on 0117 947 7422 for a friendly conversation.

🌿 When Grace joined us in September, she had no previous care experience.

But from day one, something special shone through - her kindness, patience, and the way she naturally connects with people.

Since then, Grace has blossomed into an amazing carer. She’s now one of our weekly PAs supporting clients at our Tuesday dementia day centre, getting involved in all the activities, encouraging everyone to engage, and always making sure the environment feels warm and relaxed. Her clients love her, and she has taken to this role like a duck to water.

Seeing her grow so quickly has been a gentle reminder of how much heart and dedication can transform lives. 💛

If you’re new to care, or thinking about starting a role like Grace’s, we’d love to hear from you. Give us a call on 0117 947 7422 or check out our vacancies and complete the form using the link below, and one of our friendly team will call you back for a no-obligation chat.

Making a ‘Splash’ in home care!

At some time in our lives, we all need a little more help than usual. Perhaps you’ve injured yourself and your family live far away, or you are recovering from illness or have mobility issues. It’s so important, if you need outside help, to find an assistant or carer you can trust, and who can visit you when you need them.

Fortunately, Your Care understands the need for good, supportive carers. Your Care are a family owned and run agency based in North East Bristol, who can introduce you to carers and assistants who can help you with tasks which are perhaps not as manageable as they used to be.

Established in 2014, Your Care Home Support Services have been making a real difference to the way people live their lives.

How we work?
