Alma Physiotherapy

Alma Physiotherapy Physiotherapy, pelvic physiotherapy, women's health, yoga & pilates
Honest, informative, transparent. Why is womens’ health important?

Your pelvic floor does more than you think! We rely on it when we laugh, cry, sneeze or do sports to make sure we don’t have any unwanted leakage downstairs. Liz has a masters in physiotherapy, is trained in medical acupuncture and pilates and has worked in France. In France, at least 10 physiotherapy sessions are provided after birth. Unfortunately this is not always the case in the UK! Frustrated with underfunded NHS resources and with inspiration taken from the brilliant post-natal care in France, Liz is on a mission to make womens’ health important and as standard for women in the UK. Everybody is different and your treatment program will be tailored to your needs. For this reason, the first session is always a little longer to allow time for planning and make sure you’re happy with what to do next. To book in with Liz for physiotherapy or 1-2-1 pilates at the Alma Vale Centre either call tel:+441173771186 or book online via https://www.almaphysiotherapy.co.uk/appointments . HCPC, CSP, POGP and JEMS certified

YOUR BLADDER IS TELLING YOU SOMETHING 😮
Keeping your bladder healthy matters not just for comfort, but also for your overall urinary, pelvic and even mental health. There’s also no such thing as TMI for us pelvic physios - we want to know all about your symptoms.

Many people don’t access the help they need as it can be an embarrassing topic, but the correct pelvic floor exercises can often resolve the most common type of incontinence (stress urinary incontinence) on sneezing, running or laughing.

5 ways to keep your bladder healthy:

🌸 Stay hydrated

🌸 Avoid hovering

🌸 Watch for bladder irritants

🌸 No drinks 2 hours before bed

🌸 Avoid the ‘just in case’ wee

Reach out to book a free discovery call with any of our physios if you’ve got any questions before booking in

Our pelvic health physios are so happy to help with any bladder concerns - nothing is TMI here!

RESEARCH UPDATE! 🥼
We are OBSESSED with making sure any advice you’re getting from us is backed by the most up to date evidence out there.
Agnes has summarised a paper on breastfeeding and exercise for you. We would also say this applies to anyone chestfeeding or pumping breast milk and bottle feeding!
Returning to exercise after pregnancy is not the same for everyone, but we’re happy to see that breastfeeding is not at all linked to injury risk according to Jones H. et al., 2025 - Breastfeeding-injury link: are concerns warranted?” British Journal of Sports Medicine, 59 (17): 1203-1211.
Let us know if there are any myths you’d like us to fact check for you! Warning - chat GPT isn’t always accurate either! ‼️

Let’s talk stress. It’s SO hard to remember to hit the pause button when life gets busy, but our nervous system isn’t designed to be going 100 miles an hour all the time!
Stress and anxiety can link into your breath and your pelvic floor.
Stress might manifest as:
🤍 jaw pain
🤍 urinary leaking
🤍 difficulty emptying bladder or bowels
🤍 abdominal pain
🤍 hip or back pain
It can be very difficult to unpick what your body is telling you sometimes, but if you think your pelvic floor could be affected, your physio can help.
Other ideas could include reaching out to a therapist or trusted friend or family member, giving yourself small achievable goals each day.
We like app as they have mini meditation options as short as 1 minute, or body scans.
Whatever you choose, know you’re not alone 🤝

TW tough topics on mental health and motherhood ⚠️
Perinatal mental health is SUCH an important part of recovery, so we asked some mums about the most challenging part of their transition to motherhood, and were quite moved by the responses.
Unfortunately su***de is STILL one of the leading causes of maternal death in the UK, and the ‘Perinatal Mental Health Assessments Bill’ that passed in parliament on the 22nd October is a good step in the right direction, thank you
Anyone struggling with pelvic floor dysfunction can DOUBLE the risk of depression and anxiety during the perinatal period (up to 1 year after birth).
Postnatal support still is not good enough in the UK, and we truly believe that getting early access (ideally in pregnancy) to pelvic health education and support is still so important.
We need to normalise prioritising pelvic health & take away the taboo for asking for pelvic floor assessments.
Link in bio to book for pregnancy physio, postnatal physio checks and anything else you might need during this time. (You do not need to have symptoms to have a check up!)

As the seasons change, we are reflecting on HUGE transitions that our bodies go through, especially when we think of and pregnancy.
The dramatic shift in hormones, the questioning of your sense of self and identity, having new found respect for your body in so many different ways, and finding out so many things no one warned you about.
If you’re a new mum reading this, or not-so new mum not feeling quite yourself again yet, just know that it will get better, and everyone’s journey is SO different!
That’s why we have so many options aside from just physiotherapy to help you feel better (if you feel you need it!), since this is such an individual process.
For some, that’s clear action plans and goals on return to exercise, for others it’s allowing your nervous system to be ‘held’ before moving forwards, or it could be a mix of both.
You’re not on your own 🤍
