North Bristol NHS Trust Hospital Medical Director Dr Sam Patel spoke to more than 200 people at the local Walkers and Talkers Group this week to tell them about his career as a doctor and answer questions from the audience.
Run by ex-cricket wicket keeper Andy Brassington, Walkers and Talkers was set up during COVID-19 as a way to help people connect and has grown from strength to strength. It now meets each Wednesday with more than 400 members in total, with monthly sessions in Worcester, Taunton and Cardiff.
Its aim is to provide companionship and a way for people to connect, share their stories - their highs and lows of the week - feel supported, hear from a guest speaker and have a walk around the cricket ground.
Sam spoke to attendees about being a doctor in Bristol for around 30 years, and shared his journey towards being a doctor of medicine, as well as a few insights from his career before answering questions from the audience.
There was also an extra special moment as Sam was reunited with Walkers and Talkers regular and former colleague Bob Lock, a former Immunology Lead in the laboratories at Southmead Hospital.
Bristol NHS Group Chief Executive Maria Kane will also be speaking to the group later this month.
The sessions were arranged as part of the Bristol NHS Group’s collaborations with local organisations. We’ve been working closely with Filton Avenue Primary School to share public health information and inspire the potential NHS workers of the future, and last year, a collaboration with Bristol Rovers Community Trust was announced, and we’ve been in conversations with Andy from Walkers and Talkers alongside this.
