Could the future of glaucoma treatment be surgery-free? 👁️

Some of the latest pioneering research, led by Dr Daniel Whitcomb, explored a non-invasive way to treat glaucoma.

This approach examined how ultrasound could be used to gently stimulate specific areas of the brain, helping to boost protective molecules that keep nerve cells in the eye healthy. 🧠

The findings showed potential to help slow or even prevent vision loss, offering hope for a treatment that is quick, painless, and completely surgery-free.

For over 40 years, we’ve been proud to support research like this, helping to make a real difference for people living with sight loss. And with your support, we can keep funding breakthroughs like these. 🤝

“I often feel like a tenpin, knocked down by a speed bowl, winded temporarily, then I stagger up only to be floored by the next one.”

Sheila was born with congenital glaucoma and has spent most of her life managing complications with eye surgeries and failures with corneal transplants.

“Sometimes it’s grainy, like a TV screen where the aerial isn’t adjusted properly.”

For Sheila, her sight loss has had a profound effect on her life. She has never been able to drive. She struggles to read signage for public transport. She had to give up work as a history teacher. She cannot read story books to her great-nieces and nephew. All this had a knock-on effect on her confidence and independence.

“I have been through the whole gamut of emotions – frustration, bitterness, anger, despair…”

Despite everything, research into sight loss conditions gives her hope. Hope for new treatments, and hope that newborn babies won’t have to face the same challenges she has. 🤝

“The need to find a COVID vaccine has shown what can be done if there is a collective will. With eye problems, the need is undoubtedly there, but the will is not.”

At Sight Research UK, we’re working to turn that hope into reality, funding groundbreaking research that could change lives. 🔬

Be part of the breakthrough and help fund life-changing research, bringing us closer to a future where no one has to face sight loss alone.

We all know a healthy, balanced diet is good for our body, but did you know it’s great for your eyes too? 🥗

Many of the fruits and veggies you love can actually help slow down or even prevent certain sight loss conditions.

Here are five fruits you should be including in your diet for excellent eye health:

🍏 Apples are packed with dietary fibre to help lower cholesterol, keeping your retina healthy.
🥭 Mangoes are rich in vitamin A, essential for low-light vision and strong corneas.
🍊 Citrus fruits are full of vitamin C, which supports your eye structure and keeps blood vessels healthy.
🫐 Blueberries are bursting with anthocyanins to reduce retinal damage from blue light and UV rays.
🥝 Kiwis are loaded with antioxidants that protect your retina and help prevent sight loss conditions.

For over 40 years, we’ve helped fund life-changing research to improve the lives of people living with sight loss. 🔬

One of the exciting projects we’ve supported was led by Dr Bosworth, exploring a technology called Melt Electrowriting (MEW). This innovative research could one day help repair damaged eye tissue and potentially restore sight.

MEW combines 3D printing with advanced fibre technology to create microscopic scaffolds, tiny frameworks that support the growth of healthy cells. These structures can mimic natural eye tissue, helping cells grow and function as they should. 👁️

This could lead to new treatments or medical implants that repair eye tissue and support cell growth, bringing us closer to restoring vision for some people affected by sight loss.

Helping treat conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and retinal diseases. 🤝

It’s thanks to vital support and funding that research like this can make a life-changing difference for people living with sight loss.

Meet Kerri and Mickey 🙌

On 6 September, they’ll be lacing up their running shoes to take on The Big Half in London. All in support of Sight Research UK to raise vital funds for groundbreaking research into the causes, prevention and treatment of eye disease. 🏃

Kerri and Mickey share:
“We’ve seen firsthand how precious vision is, how fragile it can be, and how urgently better treatments and earlier diagnoses are needed.

So, we’re running for everyone whose world has been blurred, darkened or threatened by sight loss, and for the incredible scientists working to protect one of our most important senses.”

They might not call themselves natural runners, but they’ve been putting in the hard work. Taking on parkruns, smashing personal bests, and steadily building up to the half marathon. A huge thank you to Kerri and Mickey. We can’t wait to cheer you on from the sidelines! 🙌

Celebrating 40 years of eye banking in Bristol 🤝🏻

On 10 March, we were honoured to join the team at Bristol Eye Hospital to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first two corneal transplants - carried out by our founder, Professor David Easty.

It was a wonderful day reflecting on the incredible progress made in eye banking over the past four decades, and looking ahead to what the future holds. And of course, no celebration would be complete without cake to mark the occasion. 🎂

A big thank you to Bristol Eye Hospital for the invitation, and here’s to many more milestones and successes in eye health to come. ✨

Did you know that around 2% of people over the age of 40 are affected by glaucoma? 👁️

This World Glaucoma Day, we’re here to remind you of the importance of regular eye tests – especially if you’re over 40.

Keeping up to date with your eye appointments can help detect glaucoma early, before significant and irreversible damage to your sight occurs.

While there is currently no cure for glaucoma, we are funding experimental projects – including one testing whether ultrasound brain stimulation could help treat the condition. 🔬

40 years of championing and accelerating innovative eye disease research. 🙌🏼

Since being founded in 1986, our charity Sight Research UK (with your support) has funded vital research into the causes, prevention and treatment of eye disease. Every year, we are working towards clearer futures for people living with sight loss. 🤝🏻

Over the past four decades, we’ve achieved some incredible milestones, including:
• Jointly funding, with other groups, the first ever Corneal Transplant Service Eye Bank.
• Helping increase the success rate of corneal transplants from 50% to over 90%.
• Diversifying beyond corneal treatments to fuel progress in research for dozens of eye conditions.

It’s been an inspiring 40 years of visionary science, and we truly couldn’t have done it without you.
