There is an interesting gender divide between men and women when it comes to hypnosis. More women are likely to use it for hypnotherapy but more men are likely to volunteer for stage hypnosis.

In my own hypnotherapy practice I have seen the division change over time. When I used to do a lot more business networking and was regularly speaking to people face to face about the benefits of hypnotherapy there was around a 50/50 split between men and women. Now that most of my clients find me online it is more weighted towards women.

This seems to reflect the general findings that women are more likely to search for therapy options of any type. It could also of course be that men prefer to address their issues in different ways but I think there are still a lot of men who aren't aware of the benefits.

It would be great to spread the word a bit more so if anyone has a connection to a men's group within a 50 mile range of Bristol that would be interested in a talk about hypnosis please get in touch. Previous ones have been well received and I usually include a demo so that people can experience hypnosis in action.

(PS, the nice thing is that whilst I was writing this 2 men emailed to book sessions ❤)

A few weeks ago I was listening to some podcasts and two separate ones referenced the story about putting a frog in water and by heating the water up slowly the frog doesn't realise and gets boiled. It's a story that most people are familiar with because it's often used as a metaphor for people becoming used to things that change gradually.

However, even though it is repeated that doesn't make it true. It isn't true (unless the frog has had its brain removed) and has been repeatedly debunked since the 1990sbut it still keeps popping up.

It's a good reminder to question "facts". Are they really facts or maybe half truths or misinterpretations or even outright lies? More and more people are trying to narrow things down to good/bad, right/wrong, us/them which misses out a lot of nuance, caveats, uncertainty and individual circumstances that are part of most of life.

And whilst you're checking other people's "facts", remember to check what you are telling yourself. A lot of my clients come for hypnosis because they want to change the unhelpful information they have told themselves so often they believe it's true. (Especially I can't do that and I'm not good enough)

If you ask most people to describe someone in hypnosis they would describe a person sitting or lying down looking physically relaxed. But that isn't always the case. Relaxation is one way of helping someone achieve hypnosis but it isn't the only way. In fact if you find it difficult to relax then it's probably the least helpful way initially.

Active alert hypnosis uses focused activity to take someone into a hypnotic state. Some hypnotists who have used this have a treadmill or exercise bike in their office but I have just asked clients to walk on the spot. The repetitive movement (gentle, not gym-speed!) and focus on the activity is a much easier way to achieve hypnosis for someone who enjoys movement but struggles with physical relaxation.

(However if you would like some relaxation there is still time to book on to Tuesday's Mental Massage: Balloon Flight at http://sharon_stiles.eventbrite.com/)

When I was growing up I only remember seeing and hearing fireworks on the week around bonfire night and at new year. Now they appear much more as part of celebrations throughout the year. The next few weeks though will be one of the peaks. Some people love them but others dread them and find them really stressful and overwhelming.

😊 3 tips to help reduce firework anxiety:

• Use the wrist acupressure point to help reduce panicky and overwhelming feelings. See the video at https://www.sharonstiles.co.uk/webvideos.php

• Listen with headphones to music you enjoy if you are at a fireworks event

• See a hypnotherapist

I have worked with several people on their fear of fireworks, using a mixture of hypnotherapy, EFT and EMDR. Most of them have found it easier to be around fireworks since their sessions.

One person reported:
❝ I was able to sit in the window, watch and enjoy the fireworks going off all around us and I felt safe, I could control my panic and anxiety and keep it in check to enjoy it. ❞

There are several ways hypnotherapy and EFT can help to address some unwanted menopause symptoms.

Physical:
🔥 Hot flushes: studies showed 57-74% reduction in frequency after hypnosis
😴 Sleep quality: improved for 50-77% of participants after hypnosis
😬 Cortisol reduction 24% - 43% when using EFT
🩸 Blood pressure: 6-8% reduction after EFT

Emotional:
😐 Mild to moderate depression: reduced from 56.8% to 9.35% when using EFT
😰 Anxiety: improvement on average in 80% of hypnosis study participants

If you are affected by any of these and would like to have a chat to find out how hypnotherapy and EFT could help you, get in touch. www.sharonstiles.co.uk/services

It's Information Overload Day. I think a lot of people find they have information overload every day and it usually has a negative impact. Information overload can have a positive effect though when used in hypnosis. It's something that I often use if someone has a really busy mind and they find it difficult to relax or their mind keeps wandering.

By giving the brain a lot of things to think about it becomes overloaded and eventually being given the option of following simple instructions from the hypnotist to focus on just one thing becomes a welcome relief. Then the session can continue, finding ways to create a positive outcome, whether that's changing a thought, feeling or habit or simply finding relaxation and calmness.

That technique is great for making positive change in a hypnosis session but it can of course have a negative effect in our world of constant information. There are so many conflicting opinions and stories that it's tiring to analyse and try and find the truth in them. So it can be easy to look for one strong voice that seems to offer a simple solution. It seems to me that there are rarely simple solutions to complex problems.
