Safety is a core principle in STAR housing because it creates the foundation that allows clients to stabilise, recover and rebuild their lives. In environments like STAR Housing, supporting people recovering from addiction, homelessness or crisis, safety affects both physical wellbeing and psychological stability.

💜 Clients need a living environment where they are protected from harm.
💜 Physical safety ensures residents can live without fear of injury, conflict, or unsafe living conditions.
💜 Recovery and personal growth require people to feel emotionally secure.
💜 For individuals coming from chaotic or unsafe backgrounds, psychological safety is often the first step toward healing.
💜 Without safety, people remain in crisis mode, which makes long-term progress difficult.
💜 Structure and safety together create a place where people can rebuild confidence and independence.

We ensure that clients live in an environment where they are protected, respected and able to focus on recovery and building a stable future.

March is widely recognised as Self-Harm Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding of self-injury, its causes and how people can access support.

The campaign aims to:
🧡Reduce stigma around self-injury and mental health struggles.
🧡Encourage open conversations about coping, distress and emotional pain.
🧡Promote support resources for people who self-harm.
🧡Educate communities (schools, healthcare, families, recovery services).

Self-harm refers to deliberately hurting oneself as a way of coping with emotional distress. It is often linked with:
🧡Trauma or unresolved emotional pain
🧡Depression or anxiety
🧡Difficulty expressing emotions
🧡Feelings of numbness or overwhelm
🧡Attempts to regulate intense feelings

Importantly, self-harm is usually about coping rather than wanting to die, though it can increase su***de risk if support isn’t available.

Helpful approaches include:
🧡Listening without judgement
🧡Avoiding shame or punishment
🧡Encouraging professional support
🧡Helping them find alternative coping strategies
🧡Checking in regularly and showing care

Support Organisations

In the UK, support can be found through organisations like:
🧡Samaritans
🧡Self‑Injury Support
🧡Mind

They provide helplines, information and support for people who self-harm or those supporting them.

🚨 If anyone you know is in immediate danger or at risk of serious harm, please call 999 or go to your nearest Accident & Emergency (A&E) department.

If you or someone you know needs to talk, support is available:
🧡Samaritans – Call 116 123 (24 hours)
🧡Shout – Text SHOUT to 85258
🧡NHS – Call 111 for urgent mental health advice

Today’s Star Day Program pottery session was next-level! We crafted slab-built mugs and oh boy, we did it step-by-step as a TEAM. 💥
The whole group stuck together, no lone rangers today! With a little help from our Volunteer , the slab-building royalty of Bristol and Sam as our cheerleader, even the quieter folks unleashed some astonishing talent.

We even broke into song with “Lean on Me” and donned matching blue T-shirts for that extra dash of camaraderie. The atmosphere? Simply brilliant.
Cheers to us and our fabulous mugs!

As STAR Housing approaches its second year of operation, the current client statistics reflect strong and encouraging outcomes for individuals engaging with the service. In a relatively short period of time, STAR Housing has supported residents to build meaningful foundations for long-term recovery and personal development.

Current data shows that 66.7% of residents have achieved six months or more of sobriety, demonstrating the effectiveness of a structured, supportive recovery environment. In addition, 38.9% of residents have sustained sobriety for over one year, highlighting the service’s ability to support individuals beyond early recovery and into longer-term stability.

Recovery at STAR Housing extends beyond abstinence alone. 77.8% of residents are actively engaging in education, courses, or volunteering, showing strong progress in rebuilding purpose, skills and community connection. These activities play a key role in developing long-term recovery capital and supporting reintegration into wider society.

Importantly, 88.9% of residents have shown an increase in recovery capital within their first three months, indicating significant improvements in areas such as wellbeing, stability, confidence and support networks. This reflects the trauma-informed and person-centred approach embedded within the STAR Housing model.

While the service currently supports a small cohort of 18 clients, the outcomes demonstrate a positive and meaningful impact on the lives of those accessing it. As STAR Housing approaches its two-year milestone, these results provide a strong foundation for continued growth, development and support for individuals seeking sustainable recovery. 💥🧡

Yesterday we looked at Step 4 — simplified:

😡 Who is annoying me
😧 What am I worried about
🌍 How do I show up in the world as a woman / man / person
😏 What am I doing that I shouldn’t be

The group really embraced the moment when I asked:
“Are we ready to look at this from an entirely different angle?”

From there we began exploring the instincts of self, how they can become overactive and how that can shape our reactions, resentments and fears.

Instead of only looking outward, we started to gently turn the lens inward, considering our own patterns, shortcomings, old behaviours and defects of character.

It’s a big topic for one session, so we’ll come back to it next week and keep unpacking it together.

Also some lovely Jaffa Cakes to be kind to ourself whilst looking inwards ❤️‍🩹

A huge congratulations to Johnny for 1 year clean and sober today! 🥳✨🙌

Johnny, you are incredible. Your journey hasn’t been straightforward, but the growth we’ve seen in you has been phenomenal. You never gave up and you kept showing up, kept trying and kept moving forward even when it was hard.

We’re all so proud of you and everything you’ve achieved this past year. This is just the beginning. Keep going & don’t give hp 💥✨🙌

This morning at our session in the Day Program, we learned keyword signs to Bill Withers’ Lean on Me (a brilliant recovery anthem). 🎶

Using sign while singing engages different parts of the brain at the same time – language, movement and visual memory – which helps people focus, remember the words and experience the message in a deeper way.

It was also a lovely way to practise the principle of COURAGE. Everyone tried something new and then shared a little performance together. Some people signed confidently, others sang quietly, but everyone took part.

A simple, powerful reminder that none of us has to do this alone. 💛

Relapse can be one of the hardest moments in someone’s recovery journey not just because of the setback, but because of the shame that often comes with it.

Addiction is widely understood as a relapse condition. That means it can happen. Recovery is rarely a straight line and for many people it involves learning, adjusting and trying again.

What deserves recognition is the courage it takes to be honest about a relapse and to come back. Admitting it, asking for help again and choosing to keep going requires strength most people never see.

As supporters, friends, family, peers and professionals we can make a huge difference. Judgment and blame often push people further into isolation, but patience, compassion and understanding can help someone find their way back.❤️‍🩹

Recovery isn’t about perfection. It’s about persistence, honesty and the willingness to begin again ❤️

Our clients from our houses and the day programme have linked up with another abstinence-based organisation for the Together we recover Coffee Morning in St George.

We believe the opposite of addiction is connection.

Community plays a vital role in building recovery capital and strengthening the foundations for long-term sobriety. When people come together in recovery, something powerful happens.

Unity is beautiful. Friendships flourish, confidence grows and achievements big or small are celebrated.

What a wonderful circle of connection.

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day✨🫶🙌
A day to recognise the strength, resilience and achievements of women everywhere.
From the women who lead, create and inspire, to those who quietly hold families, communities and workplaces together. Your impact matters more than words can express. It’s also a reminder that equality, respect and opportunity should not be privileges, but standards.

Here’s to the women who paved the way, the women making change today, and the girls who will shape the future.

In light of International Women’s Day, we would like to recognise Sammy for the amazing woman she is.✨🫶🙌
Sammy has come such a long way in such a short time. Her strength and resilience in overcoming personal circumstances, while continuing her journey in recovery, has been truly phenomenal.
Sammy is our Peer Support in the Day Programme and is also part of the STAR Art Exhibition Committee, where she continues to support others and contribute positively to our community.
Sammy, today we celebrate you and everything you have achieved. We are so proud of the woman you are and want to shout it from the rooftops.

Happy International Women’s Day to every single one of you 🫶🙌✨

We have EXCITING news !!
We have been awarded a grant for our project from Quartet Community Foundation💥

“Our mission is to celebrate and showcase the transformative journeys of individuals in
recovery from addiction through the power of art, exhibiting each piece as a beacon of hope,
human resilience and strength.”

We are proud to introduce the Star Housing art exhibition project, where individuals in
recovery from addiction will showcase their artistic journeys.
This November, across Bristol, expect a vibrant collection—3D sculptures, ceramics, paintings, screen prints and creative writing.
Our goals are to break down the stigma surrounding addiction, highlight recovery as a courageous journey and show how art helps rebuild lives and reconnect with the community.
Bristol, as a hub of recovery excellence, is the perfect setting for this uplifting event. We hope to inspire the public, while offering participants a platform to shine. We’d love your support whether as a venue, sponsor, or ally in sharing these stories.
