In this week's practice, I thought we'd focus on our neck, shoulders, and arms. Sitting with our heads bent forwards as we look at screens - something a lot of us do too much of! - causes a lot of the strain on the neck and shoulders. The weight of the head puts extra strain on the neck, and our shoulders tend to round forwards, bringing us out of our natural alignment.

So we'll focus on loosening the tension in our necks and opening out our shoulders, as well as building strength and flexibility in the arms.

Below we see Solomon easing the tension in his neck as he turns to look at the lead in his hand

Things have been pretty busy for me recently, and I've found myself a few times with my head feeling like it's going to burst, which is the perfect time to take a step back and practise a bit of mindful movement.

Using activity as a base for mindfulness can help us find anchors for our attention. Whether it's the feeling of the ground beneath our feet or the movement of the breath through our body, we can tap into these sensations and allow some of the mental chatter to disperse. And if the chatter returns, we can go back to our anchor to bring us back to the moment.

So this week we're going explore using mindful movement in our practice to help bring about a feeling of both physical and mental well-being.

Below we see Solomon tuning into the sensations created as he leans into the tree

In this week's practice, I thought we'd focus on twists, which are great for building strength in the core. They can also help increase the mobility of the spine and aid digestion.

Yoga is always about the breath, but I thought this week we'd particularly focus in on the different ways we can use the breath, both in our practice and in our wider lives.

The breath is a fantastic tool to support us in so many ways, including to allow us to self-regulate, to release tension, to aid movement, to create heat, to bring about balance, and to be mindful, and we'll use our practice to explore all these different powers of the breath.

Below we see Solomon taking a moment to breathe, and to absorb the smells and sounds around him as he self-regulates in the long grasses 😉

In this week's practice, I thought we'd work into our hip flexors. Open hips flexors are important for preventing lower back, hip, and knee pain, improving posture and balance, and generally enhancing our mobility.

Hips are also linked to emotional release through the sacral (swadisthana) chakra.

Below we see Elijah using is hip flexibility to crouch down low and examine his reflection in the puddle 😉

As the weather cools, I thought we'd use this week's practce to explore how we can use yoga to create inner heat. Using breath techniques - such as bhastrika breathing (sometimes called fire breath) - not only creates heat and energy but is also said to strengthen the lungs and aid cardiovascular health.

We'll also work with core strength and balance - engaging these muscles again creates heat from the inside.

Below we see Elijah creating inner heat on the rocking horse.

This week I thought we'd explore the concept of pratyahara. Meaning to withdraw from the senses, this is one of the eight limbs of yoga and is sometimes seen as the bridge between the more physical/external practices such as the postures (asanas) and breath control (pranayama), and the more spiritual/internal practices such as concentration (dharana) and meditation (dhyana).

The aim is to stop the mind being distracted by external stimuli and instead to find a mindful detachment where you experience sensory information without labeling it or judging it. Practising pratyahara can help alleviate some of the negative emotions we may experience when we attach stories and reactions to our experiences.

During our practice, we'll try to focus less on external stimuli - maybe even closing the eyes at times - and tuning inwards to observe without reacting.

Below we see Elijah mindfully observing the line of leaves in the water without judgment 😉

In this week's practice I thought we'd focus on isometric contraction. This is when the muscles produce force and tension, but remain the same length as opposed to shortening or lengthening - something we do a lot when we hold a static pose in yoga.

Isometric contraction is great for building strength while stabilising the joints, and it can also help improve blood flow in reduce blood pressure. We'll explore how we can use different techniques to actively increase the isometric contraction within a pose.

Below we see Elijah standing strong engaging his muscles in isometric contraction as he ponders which way to go in the maze

As I rehabilitate my leg, I've been focusing a lot on the different muscles and using yoga a lot to support my recovery. So I thought I'd incorporate some of that into our practice this week, working to both stretch and strengthen, and generally increasing flexibility of the legs, which spend a lot of time supporting us!

Below we see Elijah giving his legs a good stretch as he plays with his ball 😉

14/09/2025

This week takes us up to the autumn equinox - that point when there is an equal balance between day and night before the evenings start to draw in. The equinox is also seen as a time of letting go what you don't need in the way that the trees shed their leaves, and to be inward-looking after the higher energy of the summer.

So I thought we'd build our practice to reflect this working on ebb and flow and balance and drawing our attention inwards.

Below we see Solomon focusing inwards as he concentrates on keeping an even balance on the wall

With a bit more of an autumnal feel in the air, I thought this week we would work with a grounding practice. Focusing on our connection to the earth and using the breath to bring a feeling of security and calm, we will also play with balance.

Below we see Solomon bringing his attention to his connection to the earth to calm him and prepare him for his first day at school ❤️

In this week's practice, we're going to focus on alignment and continuity through the body - how doing something in one part of the body can have an impact elsewhere. Alongside this, we will explore proprioception - the body's ability to sense its own position and movements.

Below we see Solomon exploring how lifting his foot away from the ground changes the sense of balance up his body 😉
