We, grassroots Unison members have the following statement: Last week at UNISON conference we had the opportunity to listen to the first Labour party Leader who was prepared to talk positively in the media about being a union member and publicly support workers who take strike action. The response t...

International Workers' Memorial Day 2016

Every year more people are killed at work than in wars. Most don't die of mystery ailments or in tragic "accidents". They die because an employer decided their safety just wasn't that important a priority. International Workers' Memorial Day (IWMD) commemorates those workers.
IWMD is held on 28th April every year. All over the world workers and their representatives conduct events, demonstrations, vigils and other activities to mark the day. IWMD is also intended to serve as a rallying cry to "remember the dead and fight for the living!".

Bristol trade unionists, including members of UNISON Concorde Health Branch, will assemble at 12.30pm on Thursday 28th April 2016 at Tony Benn House, Victoria St, Bristol before marching the short distance to Castle Park to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day. Further details can be found on the Trades Council webpage.
The following day (Friday 29th April 2016), Bristol Hazards Group will be hosting a showing of the 1976 Oscar-winning film ‘Harlan County, USA’. This film documents the 1972-73 miners strike in Kentucky. Members of Concorde Health branch are invited to attend free of charge.

It would be excellent if our branch can be represented at this.

International Workers’ Memorial Day 2016: Remember The Dead - Fight For the Living

Unite South West is proud to support International Workers Memorial Day and to commemorate those who have lost their lives at the hands of negligent employers.

''When we say goodbye to a loved one in the morning before leaving for work, we expect to see that person come home at the end of the day. International Workers’ Memorial Day is about recognising the loss of those who don’t make it home at the end of their working day.

It’s a hard fact to swallow that more people are killed in work than in wars. We are talking about the loss of someone’s mother, father, son or daughter, all lives that could have been saved had Health and Safety been paramount to the working environment of the employee.''

Vice President of the Bristol Trade Unions Council and Unite South West Regional Officer, Helen Jack.

Government u-turns on 'checkoff' in trade union bill. Well done to all UNISON members who have been working on the campaign. Dave Prentis: 'We're pleased to see that the government have seen sense on check off. The Trade Union bill is still flawed but this is a real improvement'

Government plan to stop union subs being deducted from payroll would have hit low paid workers who especially need the support of trade unions. Full response https://www.unison.org.uk/news/press-release/2016/04/unison-welcomes-government-change-of-heart-over-check-off/
