If you’re feeling anxious about your little one rolling onto their front in their sleep, you are not alone! This phase can be particularly nerve-wracking for a lot of parents.

Once babies learn to roll, they often start using this new skill at night to find a comfy position. And while we know that placing babies on their backs is safest for sleep (to reduce the risk of SIDS), it’s completely normal for them to explore different positions as they grow.

✨ What the Lullaby Trust says:
Once your baby can roll both ways - from back to front and front to back independently - they will be able to find their own sleeping position. But remember, you should always start them off on their back.

Rolling usually begins somewhere between 4-6 months, depending on your baby’s development. And unfortunately this often coincides with the 4-month sleep regression (as if that wasn’t hard enough!)

A few key things to know:
⭐ Once rolling starts, it’s no longer safe to swaddle.
⭐ Until your little one can roll both ways, return them to their back if you find them sleeping on their front.
⭐ Lots of night-time rolling and waking is common at first and usually settles within a few nights.

My biggest piece of advice to help your little one through this phase? Lots of daytime tummy time! This will help strengthen their little bodies enabling them to roll both ways independently, meaning you can relax knowing that if they do roll onto their front, you can allow them to find their own sleeping position, without you having to place them back on their back each time!

Is your little one suddenly starting their day at 5am? 😩
You’re definitely not alone - this is one of the most common sleep challenges I see!

Around 4am, your little one’s sleep becomes much lighter, which makes it so much harder to resettle if they wake, making those early hours feel endless!

Here’s what I’d do if this started happening with my own little one 👇

1️⃣ Base naps off your ideal wake up time - not the time they actually wake.
If early starts mean your whole day (and bedtime!) shift earlier, you’re just reinforcing the early wake. Keep the first nap based off the time you want your little to wake (not when they actually do wake!).

2️⃣ Treat 5am like 1am.
If you respond differently at 5am, your little one learns it’s morning. Keep the room dark, stay calm, and try to settle as if it’s still the middle of the night.

3️⃣ Hold off on that early feed.
A 5am milk feed can encourage your little one to wake for it, and it gets their body clock thinking it’s morning. Try waiting 10-15 minutes, or until your desired wake time, before offering milk.

4️⃣ Temporarily push bedtime later.
Shifting naps and bedtime a little later for a couple of weeks can help shift that morning wake up. Once things settle, you can gradually bring bedtime earlier again.

Early wakes are tough - I know how draining it can feel when the day starts before the sun’s up ☀️ But with a few tweaks and some consistency, things can change!

What if I told you that in just 3 weeks time you could be feeling energised and refreshed because your little one is happily sleeping through the night? That’s the reality for Sophie and James!

“Honestly, I still can’t get over that our baby is now sleeping through the night in his own bed, no longer feeding in the night, having all naps on his own in his crib AND actually putting himself to sleep with no intervention from us at all. I never thought I’d see the day! And as a result, all of us are much happier and have more energy to enjoy our days together.”

The most important thing for Sophie was a gradual plan that moved at her pace, so together we made gradual but effective changes that have transformed her little one’s sleep. It worked because the changes we made addressed the exact causes of her little one’s sleep challenges.

Are you exhausted from feeding on every night wake out of habit rather than hunger? Do you feel ready to start reducing night feeds, but not ready to drop them altogether? Were you expecting your little one to have naturally reduced the number of night feeds by now?

If your little one is over 5 months old and gaining weight healthily you may be ready to start sleeping for longer periods between feeds!

Here are a few of my go-to tips to encourage longer spells of sleep, without having to drop night feeds altogether:

1️⃣ Boost daytime calories - Try to make sure your little one gets plenty to eat and drink during the day. Active day feeds help shift your little one’s metabolism away from nighttime and are more likely to happen at the start of a wake window when your little one is more energised. Offer that last feed of the day at the start of your bedtime routine, when your little one is still awake enough to take a full feed (and less likely to nod off halfway through!).

2️⃣ Use other settling techniques - Think about how your little one falls asleep at bedtime. That’s usually how they expect to fall back asleep overnight if they wake. So, introducing new sleep cues besides feeding can make a huge difference when you’re working on reducing night feeds.

3️⃣ Introduce a gentle feeding schedule - Set a realistic window between feeds (say every 3 hours), and if your little one wakes before that, use other settling methods. Over time, you can stretch those windows and gradually work down to one feed - and eventually, drop it when the timing feels right.

How you approach the upcoming clock change will depend on your little one’s sensitivity to change in routine, and your own parenting ethos. I’ve laid out 3 stress free approaches for you to pick from, ranging from doing diddly squat to being super prepared and adjusting your timings in advance.

REMEMBER! Any disruption to sleep that the clock change causes is usually short lived and your little ones body clock will naturally adjust in 3-4 days.
