🫂 Local partnerships are the foundation of lasting social change.

This Food Waste Action Week, we’re highlighting how our partnership with Aldi UK does more than reduce waste; it creates a vital lifeline for those who need it most. By redirecting surplus food, we empower local organisations to provide reliable access to healthy meals and essentials.

The Raft Foundation - Rossendale's Foodbank put the importance of this into words:
"It’s our privilege to help connect your donations with the people of our community referred to RAFT in need of support to access food. Working together we’re making a difference."

Pictured: Aldi working to ensure surplus food reaches our charity partners across the UK. 🫑

Together, we’re proving that being neighbourly means making sure no good food goes to waste while people are in need.

💪 Food Waste Action Week is well underway, and our longest-standing partner, Marks and Spencer, has set the gold standard for community support through surplus donations.

Last year, we hit an incredible milestone together: 100 million meals provided to local good causes across our 10-year partnership. 100 million plates of food on tables, and thousands of tonnes of good food saved from waste. 🌍🤝

Chapelgreen Community Hub, Sheffield has received surplus from M&S for over four years. Of the food they receive through Neighbourly, they said "It’s a godsend. Without it, we wouldn’t get through. We can make meals at least 4 or 5 times a week for a family of five”, which demonstrates the impact surplus can have on families in the local community.

"Our objective is to save as much food as we possibly can from waste and in the process give back to this amazing community." 🥗

The Canalside Community Fridge is a simple but powerful project tackling two problems: Food waste and food insecurity. By redistributing fresh food that would otherwise be thrown away, they support local families while protecting the planet.

Through the Neighbourly platform, they connect with retailers to ensure no good food goes to waste. Find out more here 👉 https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0sv2zy0

Food Waste Action Week is here! 🍏🤗

We're proud to stand alongside our partners at Lidl GB in their dedicated commitment to tackling food waste.

Together, since 2016, Lidl’s Feed it Back scheme has helped redistribute millions of meals across Great Britain, setting a new target to reduce food waste by 70% by the end of FY2030.

As part of this, we’re excited to launch our Surplus Saviours trial with Lidl this summer, giving even more people in local communities the chance to collect and redistribute high-quality, unsold surplus food. More food redirected to those who need it most is a true win for both people and the planet.

3 in 10 children in the UK are growing up in poverty.

New data from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation shows that child poverty has risen for the third year in a row, with 4.5 million children now living in households struggling to afford the basics.

This crisis is landing on the doorstep of our schools. Recent research from the University of Bristol shows that schools have now become the largest provider of food support in England, with around 4,000 school-based food banks operating nationwide.

After speaking with our friends at Rethink Food we have learned that teachers are bringing in food from their own homes to help hungry pupils. This shouldn't be the reality in 2026.

Over the years, Neighbourly has helped over 1,700 schools provide 45 million meals made from surplus food that would otherwise go to waste. 🫂

Are you a teacher or school staff member? We can help to connect you with local stores and supermarkets that have free surplus food to donate. Joining Neighbourly is free and helps you provide a vital safety net for families.

"Once you can instill in a child that love of reading, it will come out throughout the whole of their life." 📖

Reading is the foundation for everything, yet many children struggle to keep up in the classroom. ARCh recruits dedicated volunteers to sit one-on-one with children, turning a difficult task into a shared joy. It isn't just about literacy; it’s about giving a child the confidence to succeed in life.

Our goal is to make surplus food work for everyone.

We know that a successful collection isn't just about the food, it’s about the people.👫

We love hearing how the teams at Marks and Spencer Bicester and Kensington go the extra mile to ensure our charity partners have everything they need to support families, refugees, and the homeless. It's these connections that allow local charities to focus on what they do best: supporting their community.

🌟A huge shout-out to the volunteers and store staff making this possible!

2016 was a defining year at Neighbourly, so we're diving into the archives and joining the trend to celebrate how far we've come!

Ten years ago, we were a small team of just ~20 people (9 of whom are still here now) wearing lots of different hats to ensure our platform was making an impact in as many communities as possible!

🍽️ We had just launched a product surplus programme with our founding partner M&S to redistribute thousands of tonnes of surplus food to people in need
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Over 3,000 volunteers lent a hand to charities and local groups in their area
💰 Our partners donated more than £1,900,000 to support organisations in their communities, creating huge amounts of impact for local people

Fast forward to today, and that journey has culminated in an incredible £1.8 billion of all-time social impact.

We are so proud of this decade of growth, here’s to the next 10! 🎊

Christmas is talked about as a season of giving - but real impact comes from what we do with the resources already around us.

On Christmas Eve alone, 1.5 million meals were donated to local communities by our partners M&S, Aldi, Lidl and Sainsbury’s. That’s approximately 628,000kg of surplus food diverted to over 1,500 local good causes, marking our biggest surplus Christmas yet.🌟

And this impact goes beyond the meals themselves. At the start of this year we hit £1.8 billion in all-time social value, a figure that captures the vital "ripple effect" including improved health outcomes for families, strengthened local services and direct financial savings for community charities.

To every charity staff member, volunteer and store person who worked tirelessly over the holidays to ensure this valuable surplus reached the hearts of the communities - thank you.💙

"It feels like a second home to me" 🏡

For 40 years, The Brightwell has been more than just a clinic, it’s a lifeline for those navigating neurological conditions like MS and ME. From the hyperbaric oxygen chamber to the physio gym, it's a place where people find their strength again.

Small touches make their space feel so welcoming. Through Neighbourly, they collect surplus flowers 💐 from M&S Cribbs Causeway, meaning that instead of going to waste, these blooms help brighten the café and reception, reminding everyone that they’re part of a community that cares.
