Yes I will forever bang on about how “you’re not disciplined enough” is the dumbest take ever, thanks for asking 😎

Want to stop doing that thing but also finding it hard to stop? That’s because the behaviour (binge eating, over exercising, restricting food) is serving a purpose for you.

Figure out that purpose.
Learn different ways to cope with the discomfort.
Then watch the behaviour reduce.

(With the caveat that this simplified version doesn’t account for the work you have to put in and the way your brain will scream at you to suppress it with 45 Kit Kats.

Learning about body image and the structures, influences and standards that keep us stuck will never stop being fascinating to me (and frustrating, galvanising, exciting, infuriating).

If you want to show support, you can:

Talk to the person you’re concerned about. Ask them if they’re ok, offer a safe space to share their struggles without judgement or advice.

Learn about eating disorders in order to understand them and to be able to communicate this.

Stop talking about body shapes, weight and appearance. This includes compliments.

Don’t talk about dieting to others, even if well-intentioned.

Stop doing anything that even remotely resembles monitoring the person’s food intake.

Remember that eating disorders are complex mental illnesses, and while it’s understandable to want to fix things, sometimes the best thing you can do is be there and be open to learning.
