nerding out on neuroscience + eating behaviour,

why yes, it is my favourite topic, thanks for asking 😊

(cue my secondary school teachers going into shock witnessing the career direction I’ve taken)

anyway- I’m sick to death of people simplifying nutrition and eating as being a matter of willpower and discipline.

eating behaviour is beautifully (and annoyingly) complex.

when we talk about control, you NEED to understand and learn to work with your brain doing its thing.

your brain is geared for survival, and it will prioritise that over your feelings.

and that’s ok. it’s quite useful, really.

learning about dopamine and eating behaviour helps to release some of the shame you’re holding about your ability to control how you eat. and yes, it is changeable but likely not in the ways you’ve tried in the past.

It’s been a while, and I see there are a bunch of new faces. Thank you so much for joining me in learning about your body and brain. It’s a nice corner of the internet to hang out in.

and man am I grateful for learning about body image.

It’s exactly what I needed to help me understand why this was so important to me,

and then learn how to let it go.

Because you can. And you should.

You start by questioning who/what makes you feel the way you do about your body.
‹What were the formative moments and influences in your life that taught you that your body wasn’t good enough?

And how would it look if you were to let that go and live life the way you want?

If you’re highly self-critical,

(the vast majority of my clients are)

It’s normal to feel petrified of letting this go.

Even if the rational part of your brain knows it’s probably not that helpful.

What’s familiar to you feels safer.

It’s your default for when you’re not on track,

You’re feeling demotivated

Or you’re experiencing a setback.

It makes sense to be sceptical about being kinder to yourself.

But developing self-compassion and a more rational, kind inner voice is often the key to becoming unstuck.

Here’s something interesting I realised this week:

For someone who’s pretty terrified of looking like a failure,

I sure have taken a lot of risks, jumped in the deep end many times and made some very impulsive decisions without planning for how it may work out (can confirm that the success rate on this is a little questionable).

I got into this work not knowing much at all about running my own business,

and only knowing a little about how to actually help people change their behaviour.

What I didn’t anticipate or plan for was how excited I would be about the road it’s taken me on,

particularly my understanding of how powerful it is to just LISTEN.

Enabling people to feel heard, validated, understood and not judged.

Not trying to fix, rescue or always feel like I need to offer solutions.

Because this little biz is a team of 1, I don’t often get feedback or reassurance that I’m doing this well.

So this testimonial is lets me know I’m on the right track.

If you’re looking for a safe space to figure out your messy brain, you’re right here 👋

I presented an online workshop this week and someone asked me this afterwards.

Here’s some of the other impacts that negative body image can have on your life:

đŸ‘‰đŸ» you’re more likely to reject or ignore opportunities to rest or practice self care, even if you desperately need it

đŸ‘‰đŸ» you’re less likely to express your needs, desires or preferences in the bedroom, which can be both unsatisfying but also dangerous

đŸ‘‰đŸ» you’re less likely to put yourself forward for opportunities, form new relationships or stand up for yourself, even if you really want to

đŸ‘‰đŸ» you’re more likely to avoid going to the doctor or getting health issues checked/sorted out, even if your symptoms are worrying you

đŸ‘‰đŸ» you’re more likely to ignore or try to suppress hunger, but also more likely to binge or punish yourself via your food choices

This is why I advocate so much for doing body image work. Building positive body image can influence you across all areas of your life, it can keep you safe and healthy and it can move you towards goals that felt unobtainable before.

Positive body image can be pretty weirdly represented on social media

You’d be forgiven for thinking that it’s all about squashing your tummy over, taking a picture and declaring to the world that you love yourself.

It goes a lot deeper than that.

Positive body image is about being FLEXIBLE with your thoughts towards your body,

Spending a lot less time thinking about it,

Doing what feels good for your body and well being,

and giving up on the horrendous messages you’ve heard your whole life about why you’re not good enough
*millennial shudders*

If body image is something you’d like to work on,

you’ve come to the right place.
