Those of you who have been into clinic in the last few months will have experienced sitting on the Z Chair. Alex Prince has been working extremely hard to take a vision for better seating and turn it into a fantastic Z Chair. We use them in clinic and they are really comfortable to sit on. Clients have been intrigued and pleasantly surprised at how comfortable they are.

Just to reassure you I will be in clinic for Physiotherapy appointments throughout November. Healthcare can remain open to help support people with their health and wellbeing.

If you are struggling with aches and pains, have an ongoing injury that isn't getting better or you need to complete your rehab following surgery, do get in touch.

I am following covid safe practices to ensure everyones safety.

What does that mean if you want an appointment?
- I will speak to you briefly over the phone/email when you enquire about an appointment to check that you are happy to attend in person and that it is appropriate to see you in clinic rather than doing a virtual appointment.
- Once we've booked an appointment you will receive a consent and covid symptoms screening form
- 24 hrs prior to your appointment you will be sent a covid symptom screening form
- You will be asked to wear a mask while you are here
- When you attend the clinic I will take your temperature and oxygen saturations on arrival.
- I will be wearing PPE throughout the appointment

What are we doing to keep the environment safe?
- The clinic space is cleaned at the start and end of the day, and between clients
- I am leaving a gap between clients to ventilate the room
- You will asked to arrive at the time of your appointment, not earlier, as we don't have a waiting area at the moment.
- We use a fogger at the end of each day to clean the whole building.

I'm at Active8 on Tuesdays and Thursdays
Do get in touch if you want to book an appointment or have any questions.

I’m back in clinic!

Have you been struggling with an injury or aches and pains that just aren’t resolving during lockdown? Get in touch and let’s help get you back on track!

Things are a little different as you can imagine. Although I’m back in clinic to see people in person if appropriate, all appointments must be prebooked. It is important to consider whether a virtual appointment would be as effective. Through a short triage appointment we can work out the best way to see you.

Your health and wellbeing is a priority as well as looking after those working at Active8 and the wider community.

Here is a little video to explain how a face-to-face appointment would look.

I’m really pleased to have become a qualified First Aider for Mental Health.

I’ve wanted to do this course for a long time but the logistics of attending a course have never worked out. Then along came lockdown and the world of online courses opened up!

The last few months have been a real challenge for everyone. We have had to adapt to things extremely quickly as well as having many of our coping strategies taken away from us.

There are 5 key steps to mental wellbeing:
1. Connect with other people
2. Be physically active
3. Learn new skills
4. Give to others
5. Pay attention to the present moment

I’ll admit my answers to these during parts of lockdown would have been.....
1. I want to see my friends but I’m not allowed!
2. Yes I know I can do another online session, but I just want to get outside and run!!!!
3. Er.....I don’t see any volunteers to look after the kids while I ‘develop as a person’
4. My kids are taking everything from me
5. I want to be anywhere but the present moment!!!!

It’s definitely been a mental wellbeing rollercoaster and I know I’m not the only one.

Mindset is a huge factor in how we are feeling mentally and physically. My personal strategy for dealing with a dodgy mindset is to give myself a talking to in the mirror. Less ‘Mirror, mirror on the wall’ and more ‘come on, we can do this, we’ve picked ourselves up before and stepped forward’.

A while ago I learnt this question....’how would your most resourceful self do this?’

Its been a really helpful question.

Sometimes it helps to ask that question talking it through with someone else.

Tonight I ventured out into the big wide world beyond our local streets for the first time in almost 4 weeks. It was a strange experience. I think it was the people queuing up outside the supermarket that hit me the most. This is the first time I’ve experienced lockdown in the area I’m usually walking around all the time in ‘normal’ life.

It was lovely to stretch my legs a bit further but running didn’t give me my usual headspace. My head was full of thoughts about what is going on and making sure I was well away from people.

The weather is being kind. Long may that last. It was hot running today, really warm!

If you are missing your regular exercise and you want to try some other things I thoroughly recommend all of these wonderful people:

Bodi Studio near Monaco is run by my friend and ex colleague Teresa. They are running free Pilates classes for all levels via Instagram

Abi is a fantastic Solution Focused Hyponotherapist and she is running regular free online relaxation sessions

Vicki & Heather are both a wealth of knowledge on women’s health and fitness

A new month. How are you?

Day 11 in isolation in our house and another run around my garden! It was absolutely bliss. Definitely my time, my space and as much of a pace as you can run in small circles! I had Brené Brown talking some sense to me through my headphones and some desperately needed space for myself. As a massive introvert I’m finding being physically around people (especially 2 pre-schoolers) all the time really challenging. I needed that run!

What I’ve learnt about isolation and running around your garden:
- when you have freedom, you can’t imagine why you would ever run around the same small space. When you don’t have freedom you will run in whatever space you have!
- an audiobook is essential. It’s boring running in circles. When you can’t escape outside you need to escape in your head
- Change direction every 5-10 laps. It’s important mentally to stem the boredom but also important for your body that you’re not always running the same tight corners in the same direction.
- do bother to clear the garden toys out of your path.....after so many laps you will trip over them!
- who cares what your neighbours think!!!! It will be a conversation starter when you can finally see them out on the street

Take care and stay safe xx
