"I'm not going to give up, I'm not going to let it defeat me. I'm going to fight it - I'm following that route."

Amanda was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2021. Since then, she’s focused on maintaining a positive mindset to support her mental health, showing incredible strength and hope every day.

"I've always loved sports and being physically active. Running has always been my passion, and that hasn't changed. In fact, Parkinson’s has worked well for me in that area.

"I also attend a PD Warrior class. They're a really good bunch and it's not just the physical benefits of going to this class, it's also the emotional, the laughter we have.

"I don’t really do negativity and prefer to channel my energy into positivity. I will always listen to anyone looking for support, but positivity has to be a choice too."

Mental health plays a key role in managing Parkinson’s. Taking care of emotional well-being can really improve how someone copes and thrives with the condition.

The Northwest Somerset Parkinson’s Support Group now has a Parkinson’s Walking Football Group, set up with help from Parkinson's UK ⚽

We meet on Friday mornings 10am to 11am at Portishead Town FC playing outdoors on an artificial turf pitch. Each session lasts one hour beginning with a warm up, followed by 3 games, each of 10 minutes duration, with breaks in between then it’s back to the clubhouse for tea, coffee and cakes or biscuits.

Some of the participants have obvious played football before, some definitely haven’t and at least one regular has still not even watched a match on TV! Each week skills are developing but each player comes along to have a good time, get a bit of exercise and all the benefits of a social activity. Most importantly, it’s good fun!
