Wellbeing and Resilience Tip 3: Power of LAUGHTER

We all know it feels good to smile and to laugh! It releases feel good endorphins in the brain and body which stimulate more energy and positive feelings and reduce stress and lift mood.

But we don't have to just find something funny to stimulate these feel good responses - by faking smiling and laughing you experience the exact same benefits...the brain doesn't know the difference between a real laugh and a fake laugh!

A good time is first thing in the morning when you shower...spend a few moments quietly laughing to yourself in the shower (or louder if there is no-one to hear you)...smile broadly in the mirror and take a few deep breaths afterwards and silently thank the universe for another day to experience being alive. Then slowly turn the shower to cold and invigorate your mind and body with the power of the cold morning shower!!

The beauty of creating laughter in your life early each day is that it sets your day off in a very positive direction and then you are much more likely to see things in your day that bring about more laughter and thereby create more positive feelings which, in turn, will bring about even more laughter. Try it!!

It really works make it a regular practice each day

Wellbeing Tip Number 2: We are what we do repeatedly!

I love this quote from Aristotle as it's as true now as it has been throughout all human history. The more we practice, the more skilled we become at something and the more we benefit...

This can certainly apply to Wellbeing and Resilience.

It's better to meditate every day for 5 minutes than once a week for 1 hour. Regular daily practice of meditation changes your life!

And yes only 5 mins will do if that's all you think you have...you are taking time each and every day to slow down, take time for yourself and get to know who you are in a much deeper way. There are countless benefits to be gained on every level of your life.

The same principle can be applied to anything you do for your wellbeing or emotional health whether journaling, movement or practicing gratitude.

The more we can make a little time to weave these activities into our daily schedule the more centred and grounded we will feel and the more easily we will go with the flow of life.

Hello friends

I have decided to challenge my resistance to social media posting and reach out to my FB audience with some weekly tips on managing your wellbeing during these challenging times.

Tip no 1 is focusing on the belly as a tool for greater wellbeing

We all have very over active monkey minds so bringing our attention into the belly area as often as possible is hugely beneficial for drawing ourselves out of our incessant chattering minds and into our energy centre in the abdomen. In Chinese medicine the belly is known as the Lower Dantian and is the seat of your life energy or 'Chi'

So any opportunity you can bring your attention into the belly...this could be when washing up, doing your teeth, sitting on the toilet or simply going for a walk.

The more we are rooted or 'present' in our body then the less we are engaged in our mind and the better for our wellbeing and mental health!

Finally a simple practice is to breathe deeply in and out of the belly and keep your hands on the area to guide your breath.

Enjoy the simplicity of being present in your belly!!

My Yoga journey so far...

I first came across yoga in 2008 when travelling for a year in India (see above picture of me in the high Himalaya) and I have not stopped practicing since. I had no idea what to expect from my first class but I certainly didn't expect to be told I had the body of a 90 year old man! Through regular practice I realised just how much physical (and thereby emotional and mental) tension I was holding in my body and the yoga postures seemed to do wonders with releasing this. I also got in connection with the amazing power of proper yogic breathing and immediately quit my cigarette habit...I was hooked! I continued to practice throughout my year in India with different teachers and on my return home yoga helped me enormously with managing the stress of the big transition.

In 2014, after 6 years of regular practice, I did my 200 hour Teacher Training certificate in the Himalayan mountains with the amazing Trimurti Yoga School and, upon moving to Bristol, I began to set up classes. I now have 5 years of experience and have taught thousands of students. I love teaching yoga and it gives me great happiness to help share this practice with others.

I teach a variety of styles including vinyasa flow, hatha flow, hatha and meditation; I often although not always use music to enhance the experience for the students. I am very focused on proper alignment, but also want my students to really feel into their bodies and move in a dynamic, fun and creative way. I try to bring humour to the classes and help everyone not to take it too seriously and leave feeling happy and peaceful. My classes are available to all levels and I offer many options for all students. Come and try!
