Green High Kingsdown & Green Cotham

Green High Kingsdown & Green Cotham We are a community urban greening project based in Cotham, Bristol. We’d like to create gardening and nature opportunities and experiences in the city.

We run free gardening sessions to create beautiful wildlife friendly gardens for residents, commuters and wildlife. We are Cotham Parish Church, High Kingsdown Community Association and residents who want Cotham and Kingsdown to be beautiful and green, better for wildlife and for people. This FB page is for two community gardening projects which work out of HKCA and the church; Green Cotham and Green High Kingsdown. Green Cotham is a free drop in group organised by Cotham Parish Church that runs weekly on Wednesday afternoons 2-4pm. The aims are to get local people together and to take care of local green spaces so they are beautiful and helpful to local wildlife. Last year we had 35 volunteers including 8 students helping us to develop an insect friendly meadow, we built insect hotels, planted trees, created a hoverfly lagoon, mini ponds, we built new pollinator friendly flowerbeds in the church and in High Kingsdown, and many other wildlife friendly projects. https://cothamparishchurch.org/groups/

The Coop have just taken Green Cotham as one of their causes for 2022-23. If you would like to support us here is the link: https://membership.coop.co.uk/causes/69822

Green Cotham is being funded by Awards for All 2022-23

Green High Kingsdown is the name of several different community initiatives formed by residents of High Kingsdown. Starting in 2016 over the years we've worked with the council, residents and UoB gardening clubs to repair rotting brick planters, dig out many weed tree stumps, maintain planted areas and planted many trees. In 2017 High Kingsdown was part of a pilot study looking at alternatives to the pesticide glyphosate. The study ran for a year and since then our estate has remained pesticide free and we have regular community sessions caring for lanes. In 2019 we worked with the council on the new High Kingsdown playground and asked for green and natural elements to be included in the designs. Cotham Parish Church sits on the edge of High Kingsdown. It's grey stone walls are surrounded by gardens and Green Cotham is working on these so they become wildlife friendly community gardens with public seating. CPC is an inclusive church that aims to support nature, community and mental health find out more here: https://cothamparishchurch.org/about-us/

🕷️Look at this beauty👀

This fantastic image of a female wasp spider was taken by volunteer Chris Taylor at our Bennett’s Patch and White’s Paddock reserve.

Despite its warning stripes, the wasp spider is harmless and its resemblance to a wasp helps to keep predators away⚠️

Females are much larger than the males and have the distinctive markings, whereas males are less colourful and are only active for a short period in the summer.

Males also run the gauntlet of being eaten by the females during the mating season 😮

These amazing wasp spiders are venturing north, following their arrival on the south coast of England just over 100 years ago, and can be found in a variety of habitats but especially grassland.

𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝘂𝗽 𝗮 𝘀𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹, it's really important to give its shell a gentle tap! 🐌 This simple action is crucial to its survival.

When a snail is relaxed, its body, particularly a sensitive part called the mantle, might be slightly outside the shell. The mantle is a key part of the snail's anatomy, responsible for creating the shell and protecting its internal organs.

If you pick up a snail without a tap, you might accidentally damage its mantle. This can cause a serious injury or even be fatal.

By giving the shell a light tap first, you startle the snail, causing it to retract its soft body completely back inside its protective home. This ensures that when you pick it up, you won't harm it. So, next time you see a snail, remember to to keep it safe! 😊

Green Cotham was recently awarded two years funding from the National Lottery! ❤️
This will fund our lead project worker a drop in assistant and gives us funds for plants and tools.

We held interviews on Monday and are delighted to say we have found somebody to take on the role of assistant! They’ve got lots of relevant experience and are pretty interested and excited about plants and community gardening. 🥳 All being well they will start helping us after Easter. 👩‍🌾
