Keeping our older pets mobility in tip top condition this Autumn:
Its always important to keep our geriatric pets as active as possible whatever time of year we are in, and I am always encouraging this when I see my physio patients. As the weather becomes colder and damper its even more important to keep our golden
oldies moving little and often to prevent joints becoming stiff and uncomfortable resulting in reduced mobility and willingness to exercise. Shorter but more frequent walks on flat level ground for our dogs is sensible, as does making sure beds are not by any drafts. Finding ways we can encourage our cats to move around the house more, such as moving food bowls to different places in the house so they need to find it can all help towards minimizing joint stiffness and the possible need for any prescription medications. Be creative in finding ways you can help your pets stay active this Autumn.

It's that time of year again.
The fire work season is upon us. Fireworks can cause stress, anxiety and sometimes aggression in our pets. Here are 10 top tips this bonfire night and firework season.
1. Walk dogs earlier- try and walk your dogs before it gets dark to minimise the risk of being out when they go off.
2. Keep cats indoors- encourage your outdoor cats to come indoors earlier so they aren’t wondering outside when it gets dark.
3. Create a safe space- creating a safe space in the corner of your room can be really beneficial to your pets this time of year. Put food/ water bowls there and try and make it dark and cosy. Its important not to confine them. Look for signs as to where they prefer to go in your house when they are scared.
4. Turn up the tv, radio and shut the blinds, curtains and windows to muffle the sound from outside.
5. Make sure they are microchipped, and all your contact details are up to date. Scared pets can run away!
6. Bring rabbits and guinea pig hutches indoors- It might be worth considering bringing them inside. These sensitive little creatures often suffer the worst this time of year. Remember to give them lots of extra bedding so they can hide away.
7. Stay at home- If possible, stay at home to reassure your pet and keep them as calm as possible. Stressed pets can become destructive if left to their own devices.
8. Check you garden, fields, yards each morning for any fire work debris.
9. Store fire works correctly. Make sure they are well out the reach of any animals as contact and ingestion of fireworks can be extremely serious.
10. Positive reinforcement and desensitisation- using food treats/toys can be a really good way of turning something scary into not so scary. When a loud noise goes off feeding a treat at the time can turn the situation into a positive one.
