Each horse has his own individual needs when it comes to parasite control. But when you're responsible for deworming a number of horses on one property, how do you meet each one's needs?

“Just treating at fixed and frequent intervals with no testing is the equivalent of fumbling in the dark. You will have no idea of what you are doing.”

Hopefully, most of you are now aware of the growing resistance problem to wormers in the UK. We now recommend a targeted approach to worming (on the basis of regular worm egg counts on the droppings through the grazing season) instead of the traditional process of worming horses at set intervals throughout the year. Now is the time to get the first faecal worm egg count of the year in to find out if your horse really needs that Spring wormer!

Did you know?
• For every 10 adult horses grazing only 1 or 2 will need worming
• 4 out of 5 wormers are given unnecessarily
• ‘Targeted’ worming is proven to be cheaper
• Over-worming causes wormers to become ineffective
• Resistance to wormers is already widespread
• Over-worming is damaging to the environment

So, if you are thinking of worming your horse then STOP, collect a ball of faeces and have it assessed. Hopefully your horse will be one of the 80-90% of horses that don't need worming regularly.
