They say it takes a village to get you by without a vehicle (something like that).

Between my clutch going in early December, and a rogue sheep on the a470 early January I have only had my van for 3/12 weeks during that time.

Thank you to every person who has:
-picked me up or dropped me off
-picked up or dropped off my daughter
-picked up or towed my vehicle
-dropped in to let my dogs out
-looked after my dogs
-given me a lift
-given me a vehicle (all of them !)
-rearranged a meeting / appt

Huge thanks to everyone of you 😮‍💨

On to the next

Circumstance and injury have been the two biggest determinants of my training pivots in the last 15-20 years.

The opportunity for me right now has emerged as running - something I’m far more naturally designed for than my training pursuits over the last 10 years and I’m enjoying it.

I have always run, in the past to a decent level and purely on intuition. This lends itself to running harder / faster whenever I ran.

As my training and clinical experience matures I am ever more interested in managing my longevity, particularly training volume and intensity.

This time through I am going to take the opportunity to learn heart rate training to try and guide things and from my first few weeks of deliberately training low intensity (zones 1 and 2) I can see the importance of an aerobic base to underpin the higher intensities down the track. I can also see quite dramatic increases in my zone 2 running speed.

Life is too short to miss a chance to learn new ways to train, so let’s see where this one leads 😎 🏃🏻‍♂️

If you’re going to do something, why not do it as well as you can ?

This was a quote that stuck with me from Ian Jeffrey’s TWENTY years ago.

Ian was my first S&C coach when I played rugby for Wales U16. From here Ian convinced me to attend his college where I pursued Sport and Exercise Science and really was my first guide through the Strength and Conditioning scene.

Great to catch up and to thank him for really providing the launchpad to my career since.

Whilst I grabbed a quick session It was very nostalgic to hear Ian coaching a group of high school prospects. Took me right back ☺️

Fortunate students

A couple weeks into the new year and I’ve not posted much.

I’ve pulled the trigger on a big shift in training, largely for valuing the importance of time at home with the family.

The wrestle with working long hours and then spending more time at the gym just isn’t appealing or appropriate right now.

For these reasons, I have mapped myself out a route back to an old body shape, sub 90kg and less of a training schedule, and more a flexible checklist of what I’m aiming for each week in short snappy slots I can mostly do anywhere.

Come February, in a lighter frame, fitness and bodyweight training will be a lot more appealing and this will coordinate well with Kilimanjaro trekking this summer.

I am considering using One Arm Chin as a 12-18 month training goal (10 strict 2 arm reps possible right now), but let’s see how wearing

Thanks to the boys .recreation.culture culture for putting these together.

If you’re local to Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells or neighbouring towns, this is the most comprehensive support package I could have put together to take your health to the next level for 2024.

This is the programme I would want if:
1. I was over 50, more aware of getting my health prioritised to be strong, fit and healthy like you perhaps used to be
2. I Knew how important exercise was but have struggled with aches and pains which have put me off
3. I was the parents of an aspiring young athlete and I wanted them to safely build a foundation for a lifelong training career.
4. I have the new year bug and want a science based programme to become my fittest, strongest most resilient version of myself.

Contact me for more info about joining or .recreation.culture

Musings in the 🛀
Robert Sapolsky is my biggest academic influence without question, and when he shares his teaching I 👂🐐
His latest book - Determined could be read as extreme nihilism. Prof Sapolsky makes the case that every behaviour is influenced from the second before right back to millennia ago and because of this, there is no place for free will. It was not my choice to do that good act today because the very fact I “chose to do it” means I was influenced, by my upbringing for example to do it, so it wasn’t my free choice. I am not superstitious, but I do feel that fate is written, and our lives, and everything, is pre determined (haha cue nihilistic sigh 😔)
Prof Sapolsky says it makes no more sense to credit a world champion with praise than it does to punish / blame a person for going bankrupt 😵‍💫
I struggled when I read this with an internal battle. Everyone loves praise!
Sapolsky goes on: “if that makes you uncomfortable, you’re the lucky one. Most people in this world, are having a torrid time, and it’s entirely not their fault”.

What a dawning! It spiralled with me and of course, it’s true, no truer than something I see almost daily - Sciatica ( or a disk injury).

As a society we relate a back or disk injury with a heavy or awkward lift (WE DID)yet when you look at the risk factors GENETICS 🧬 are by far and away the biggest factor. The famous twin study followed identical twins across the life-span and irrespective of their sport, manual or desk based occupation, they injured their disk the same!!
😵‍💫😵‍💫
And this makes sense as the majority of people were “picking up a pencil”, or “getting out the car” when it happened.
It’s like it was pre determined and was gonna happen at some point.
🤷🏻‍♂️
Accepting that you WERE NOT TO BLAME for this, or the logs you were chopping is exactly the opposite of nihilism for me, because we can come to terms with it, realise the disks LOVE load and we can almost without exception, get back to full thoughtless-fearless-awkward -heavy-movement with our back(s). 🕺🏽🤼‍♂️🏂⛷️🏌🏽🚣🏾‍♀️

*note: smoking IS bad for disks 🚬 🛑 ✋🏻
Friday night musings 💆🏻‍♂️ 🛀
