Was life a little simpler before mobile phones?đ§
Itâs a question many of us quietly ask from time to time.
Not because technology is âbadâ far from it. Our phones connect us, support us, organise us, and hold endless knowledge at our fingertips. Theyâre incredible tools.
But sometimes, itâs helpful to pause and notice the contrast between then and now.
Then:
⢠We waited without distraction in queues, at bus stops, in the quiet moments.
⢠Our minds had more opportunity to wander, daydream, create.
⢠Conversations happened without the ping of notifications.
⢠A walk outside was simply a walk, not something to document or measure.
Now:
⢠Constant updates keep our brains switched on.
⢠We rarely sit in silence.
⢠Our attention is pulled in multiple directions at once.
⢠Rest feels harder to access, even when weâre tired.đ´
This isnât about rejecting modern life itâs about achieving balance.
Our nervous system thrives on simple pleasures:
⢠A cup of tea without scrolling.
⢠A slow breath in of fresh air.
⢠Five minutes of looking at the sky, not a screen.
⢠Being present with someone we care about.
⢠Letting the mind drift instead of constantly consuming information.
These gentle moments give the brain space to settle, restore, and reset.
They reduce cognitive load, ease overthinking, and help regulate the stress response, something neuroscience consistently supports.
So today, perhaps take one tiny step back toward simplicity.
A small pause.
A moment of quiet.
A reminder that calm doesnât need to be found, it can be created.
Today Iâve begun my day with a boxing class and this evening I will sing with my choir in a local theatre, 2 beautiful arrows out of my stress bucket where Iâm present and connected.
Now off to walk the dogâŚ
Finding the balance!
Have a lovely Sunday â¨đ
