As a family-owned company with a long heritage of helping and supporting those who are experiencing bereavement, we understand that everyone is an individual. That’s why we focus on providing a truly personalised, caring and quality service and take pride in maintaining the highest of professional standards. In fact, we’ve been helping families with funeral arrangements for generations now, so no-one understands better than us what a distressing and difficult time it can be for those left behind. The world around us may have altered dramatically since our earliest roots over 331 years ago, but what hasn’t changed is our commitment to being here every step of the way for the bereaved in our communities when they need us the most.

Sixty years of Maria.

Our Community Champion in Buckinghamshire has spent over five of those years showing up every week without fail. Running Knit and Natter. Founding a choir. She’s hidden over 300 hand-knitted Never Alone buddies across Aylesbury. One parent said their son found one and now carries it everywhere to help with his anxiety. Tiny cardigans and blankets for the neonatal unit at Stoke Mandeville. This Easter, her group knitted over 80 baskets filled with Easter eggs for the staff.

Nobody who turns up to one of her groups stays a stranger for long.

The other day, the group marked her birthday the only way they know how, with a knitted bouquet made by one of the ladies.

Happy birthday, Maria. And happy Easter from all of us.

She loved pink, bright colours too. Just like her, her family said.

So her family asked everyone to wear colour to the funeral, and the team wore pink ties and the ladies painted their nails to match.

The whole room was full of colour that day.

Because every life is unique.

Our new window display is up at Attree & Kent, and this one means a lot.

It’s in aid of Ronald McDonald House Charities United Kingdom. Our funeral arranger Victoria, who helped create the display, knows what they mean to families. Over the last three years, her niece has spent long periods at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital, and RMHC have given her family somewhere to stay, close by, when they needed it most. The Brighton House has 17 rooms and helps over 240 families a year.

The hearts on the tree and around the house were hand-painted by children at Goldstone Primary School.

If you're in Horsham this week, pop into Ballard & Shortall Funeral Directors. Wendy's got Easter pictures for the little ones to colour, and a treat for anyone who brings theirs back 🐣

Our Horsham window is looking rather springlike this week. 🐣

Wendy has put together a little something for Easter. If you've got small ones who'd like to colour in an Easter picture, pop in and pick one up. Bring it back when it's done and we'll display it in the window for everyone to see. There's a small Easter treat waiting for them too.

We'd love the window to be full of colour by the weekend.

Seventeen. That's how old Matthew was when he started.

He wanted to look after people, protect them. Funeral care gave him a way.

He began as a Funeral Service Team Member, caring for Buckinghamshire families. Became a Funeral Director in his early twenties.

Every morning he arrives at his funeral home and says good morning to every person in his care. Checks on them before he does anything else. Then the families start arriving.

What still surprises him is how little families talk about death. People who love each other deeply and never once say what they'd want. So the person sitting across from him is often carrying grief and guesswork at the same time.

They walk in not knowing how any of this works. By the time they leave, they do.

He switches off at the coast with his wife, his children, his dogs. Nowhere to be and nothing to carry.

Matthew Chandler. Funeral Director. Heritage & Sons Funeral Directors, Amersham.

Looking after the dead. Steadying the living. Since seventeen.

What a morning.

Our Knit and Natter group gathered to hand over everything they've been working on to Hillary and the Neonatal unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. Tiny cardigans, hats, blankets. The table was full. So was the room.

Hillary was also presented with over 80 knitted and crochet baskets filled with little Easter eggs, donated by Aylesbury Vale Crematorium for all the neonatal staff this Easter. Our ladies also made bears for the Crematorium to give to parents at their time of need.

A huge thank you to Decena from Hulcott Nursing Home for her generous donation towards wool and refreshments, and to Sherylin Bateman from The William Harding Trust, whose funding will give the group coach outings throughout the year.

The group meets every Wednesday as part of Never Alone. 10am to 12.30pm at the Buckinghamshire Community Wellbeing Hub, 59 Walton Street, Aylesbury. It's free, no experience needed. Come along, everyone's welcome.
