👩 “So, do you have any policies that encourage neuro-inclusion?”

👩‍🦱 “Yes, you’ll find them on page 135 of the employee handbook.”

👩 “But how do they translate into office life?”

👩‍🦱 “Erm... HR might know.”

The truth is that neuro-inclusion is everyone’s business.

From the new intern to the CEO, everyone can bring their own ideas to the table.

It’s about creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and heard. 👂

Where they feel confident to share what works for them. 💪

Where they feel comfortable and productive. 💹

And that can’t be left to a single piece of paper managed by a single team.

True change starts from within. 💜

Helicoptering: that famous mode of transport that’s taken on a whole new meaning in the twenty-first century. 🚁

It's taken on a new life as an insult to throw more than a little shade on people who regularly check-in and seek to control a situation. But at work, is this really a bad thing? 🤔

Yes, checking in every 5 minutes and setting unrealistic goals isn’t helpful, but regulating your check-ins and setting realistic bitesize goals can really support people – especially neurodivergent team members.

Set regular times for check-ins with team members (make sure you stick to them!) and break big project goals into manageable bitesize chunks.

This helps provide clarity but ensures you stay away from the realms of micro-management. 💪

Let’s flip the usual conversation on its head and talk about what neurodivergence in the workplace isn’t instead of what it is…

🏷 It’s not a label – despite what we might have been led to believe previously, neurodivergent conditions don’t just display in one way and we should never make assumptions about someone’s ability based on their neurodivergence.

💹 It’s also not a trend. With unsubstantiated claims of overdiagnosis of conditions like ADHD in the media, it’s hard to know what to believe. But us neurodivergent folk have always been here – we’re just a little more visible now. 👋

💜 And it’s definitely not a problem to be solved. In an inclusive environment, neurodivergence can be a powerful way to gain fresh and innovative perspectives.

🙄 “They’re just being difficult now”

From toddler tantrums to “friendly” rivalries, we’ve all been in the situation where it feels like the person in front of us wants to show us off in the worst light possible.

But let’s reframe that thought: what if it’s not the person being difficult but rather the environment is proving difficult for the person? 🤔

What if it’s not about us? What if it’s about communicating an unmet need when they can’t or don’t want to identify it for themselves?

Viewed through this lens, it’s clear that the environment is the problem and we might even be able to start to identify how we can support that person.

This is what neurodivergent employees need and deserve. They are not “difficult” individuals or a problem to be solved. They just want to work in a supportive environment where they can thrive. 💜

What do you picture when we say reasonable adjustment?

Here are some common examples:

✨ A height adjustable desk
✨ A hearing loop
✨ Colourful overlays
✨ A piece of software

All of these are reasonable adjustments because they support somebody to do their job.

But they’re not always tangible. 👀

All of the following are ‘invisible’ reasonable adjustments that might support a neurodivergent person at work:

✨Movement breaks
✨Flexible working
✨A quiet workspace
✨Neurodiversity training for colleagues

Even though you might not be able to see or touch them, each of these things has the potential to transform how someone feels at work. 💜

Ready to challenge your thinking about reasonable adjustments?

Barbie® is finally a neurodivergent girl in a neuroinclusive world! 😁

On Monday 12th January, Mattel launched their ‘Autistic Barbie®’ as part of their line of inclusive dolls. 🙌

OK… great. But what does this have to do with workplace training? More than you’d think.

Take a moment to think about where the idea would have come to fruition. 🤔

You guessed it! A workplace.

The doll was a collaborative project between Mattel and the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. Over the course of 18 months, people with a diverse range of thinking styles and neurotypes were able to come together to make many of the ‘invisible’ elements of the autistic experience visible. 💜

We have no doubt that everyone involved would have had sensitive conversations about real-life experiences of autism and the resulting doll speaks to how effectively they did that in their workplace. 👏

Even the biggest brands are guilty of telling us to “just do it”. 🤷♀️

But telling someone to “just get on with it” when they’ve disclosed a neurodivergence to you just doesn’t cut it.

On the surface, encouraging them to approach work (and life in general) through a “business-as-usual” lens encourages professionalism and productivity.

If they look like they’re coping, they probably are. Right? ❓

Very wrong.

By brushing off what they’ve told you, that person feels as though their experiences have been dismissed and devalued.

They feel that they have to carry on coping with their condition in an unsupportive environment and although they may look and sound professional, masking their difficulties is exhausting and they’ll soon burn out.

By embracing their neurodivergence instead of dismissing it, you can harness the full potential of your workforce and create an environment where everyone feels accepted. 💜

Sometimes the universe really does nudge you and says, pay attention.

On Thursday, I received an email from . An author and TEDx speaker from Australia.

She was in Burnley visiting family. Her brother-in-law drove past our office, spotted the Neuro Sparks sign, took a photo and sent it to her.

She hesitated before reaching out. But she did.

Fast forward to today. I had a meeting booked in. It got cancelled. Suddenly, I was free.

So we met.

If you have ever believed in things lining up at exactly the right moment, this will probably convince you.

Our values align in a way that feels rare. Her book puts words to so much of what we are trying to build at Neuro Sparks around diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, but more importantly, what it actually feels like to belong.

Gry is a powerful speaker and advocate in the DEIB space. She arrived with copies of her book for me and we spent the time talking, connecting, and imagining what could be next.

And this is not the end of the story.

We are already talking about future work together, including international projects.

Sometimes it really does start with a car driving past the right building.

Keep your eyes peeled. Check her book out at https://grystene.rocks
