Quality Over Cost

When comparing a course priced at £240.00 with one at £410.00 (excluding VAT), the difference often lies not in the quality of delivery, but in pricing strategy. While it is recognised that certain providers may operate with higher overheads, this does not necessarily equate to superior training provision.

High-quality training should be designed to meet the specific needs of the organisation and delivered in a manner that enables participants to effectively learn, retain knowledge, and confidently apply their skills in practice.

A higher course fee does not inherently guarantee excellence. True value is reflected through participant satisfaction, measurable learning outcomes, and the calibre of instructors—particularly those with genuine industry experience who can translate real-world insights into practical learning without overwhelming the delegates.

Is your First Aid Training Sufficient?

In August this year a large Supermarket, a Security Company and the SIA were sent a report from the Coroner issuing a Regulation 28 Report to Prevent Deaths. In February an investigation commenced into the death of a shopper that suffered a seizure, which resulted in a hypoxic brain injury as no CPR was commenced until the arrival of the Ambulance Service. There was no effective First Aid trained staff on site, no one realised that leaving the patient on their back was dangerous and no one realised that she had stopped breathing. There was an AED in the store, but nobody fetched it, the store had no First Aiders on duty, the security guard was first aid trained, but the shop staff did not know that, he also admitted that his first aid training was a tick box exercise so that he could gain his SIA licence, his training did not include the use of an AED or even placing a patient into the recovery position. In conclusion a member of the public died in a shop where they should feel safe, which potentially could have been avoided, insufficient trained staff and poorly trained security definitely did not help the situation.

Regulation

28: Report to Prevent Future Deaths

Under Schedule 5, Paragraph 7 of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, and Regulation 28 of the Coroners (Investigations) Regulations 2013, the Coroner issued a report aimed at preventing future deaths. It was sent to the following parties:

The Supermarket Chain (as the operator of the premises)

The Security Company (as employer of the on-site security staff)

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) (as the licensing and regulatory body for security personnel)

Each party is expected to respond with specific actions they will take to address the identified failings and improve future safety outcomes.
