For Welsh sheep and beef farmers Eric and Steve Jones, forage quality and quantity are rarely an issue. However, the drought conditions faced in 2025 have caused them to supplement the flock earlier to maintain body condition.

“We thought 2022 was a poor year, but 2025 has been the worst since 1976. We started using Rumevite early this year to help the flock get more from the forage that was available, and it has saved the day,”

Help upland ewes through winter pregnancy by providing the minerals, trace elements and vitamins they need. 🐑❄️
The supply of important micronutrients can be particularly important in upland and hill grazing flocks.
Cobalt, zinc and selenium are examples of some of the key elements included in Rumevite blocks, designed to prevent potential problems resulting from deficiencies.
Key micronutrients to consider:
➡️ Zinc – essential in maintaining internal and external tissue health, so is particularly important, for example, in flocks where there may be a history of lameness.
➡️ Cobalt – which can be deficient in forages, is important in embryo development in early pregnancy, and also has a wider role in supporting ewe body condition.
➡️ Selenium & Vitamin E – vital in immune function as well as fertility.
Providing these important micronutrients, little and often to the whole flock, throughout the critical stages of pregnancy, will help to prevent some of the more common flock problems.

Do you know what’s in your forage?
Testing forage is vital for over-wintering cattle because it will identify any shortfalls that you can make up with the correct supplementation.
Why?
⚠️ Housing is a sudden change of environment for cattle, and may involve mixing of different groups, so it is an inevitable stress-point.
⚠️ Essential minerals, trace elements and vitamins can remedy key deficiencies and support immune system function.
⚠️ Key elements such as iodine and selenium along with readily available sources of copper and zinc will help the overall health, fertility and immune function of your herd.
How?
✅ Testing forage can identify what may be missing from your herd’s diet and where MAXX Cattle Booster Plus can help.
✅ MAXX Cattle Booster Plus contains a unique combination of ingredients to support the nutrition of a full range of growing cattle, replacement heifers and lactating suckler cows.
✅ Our formulation is backed by scientific research and on-farm trials, with benefits such as improved rumen health, increased forage utilisation and digestibility leading to tangible increases in liveweight gains and pregnancy outcomes.

🐑📊 Monitoring and keeping on top of ewe body condition in mid pregnancy is important for both lamb and ewe health. Upland ewes can do well on relatively poor forage, but Rumevite can help them make even more of this and improve the health of their unborn lambs.
How❓
The target BCS for an upland ewe should be 2.5 during the mid-pregnancy period which can require up to 8 MJ/ewe/day of energy to maintain.
• Rumevite provides a low labour, little-and-often feeding solution with a UK cereal-based feed and mineral block.
• Rumevite Hill Grazer is a 23% protein feed block ideally suited to support hill and upland ewes in mid-pregnancy.
Why❓
Because you want to support your ewes’ placenta development and provide their lambs with essential nutrients that will support birthweights, vigour and survivability.
It is also important to remember that even at this early stage, a female foetus will be developing ovaries, so the implications could reach as far forward as the future reproductive performance in those unborn lambs.

13/12/2025

Supplementing hill and upland ewes during the critical mid-pregnancy period will help to avoid any loss in body condition that could result in lower survival rates and reduced viability in newborn lambs.

Maintaining ewe body condition scores (BCS) in the second trimester (days 45–90) can be made easier using Rumevite, which complements low-quality grazing and provides additional minerals and trace elements vital to the development of a healthy placenta.

💡Things to consider:

👉Placental growth takes place in the earlier stages of pregnancy, so this is not a time for ewes to be losing body condition.
👉Weight loss at this critical stage could inhibit placental development and lead to some disruption in the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the foetal lambs.
👉A lack of supplementation can impact on lamb birthweights, vigour and survivability.

Little and Often – 24/7 Supplementation 🐑
Rumevite blocks are visited between 16-27 times in a 24-hour period. This little and often approach helps to:
• Stabilise rumen pH
• Improve forage digestibility

Did you know 75% of foetal growth occurs in the six weeks before lambing? During this time, ewes’ energy and protein requirements rapidly increase to:
• Ensure lamb development
• Support colostrum
• Improve milk production
Supplementing forage with Lifeline helps support colostrum and milk let-down at lambing, while protecting your ewe’s immune function.
Available as blocks or buckets, Lifeline also provides all the essential nutrients required to help support success and lambing and beyond.

Forage quality and quantity have plummeted in many areas of the UK this year. Feeding concentrates during mid-pregnancy can be costly, labour intensive and may cause ewes to gain excess weight.
Rumevite, however, provides:
• A steady source of nutrients to support development of the placenta and growing lambs
• Urea to support rumen function
• An energy boost
For hill-grazed flocks, Rumevite Hill Grazer provides a cost-effective, longer lasting solution to supplement poor grazing when ewes need it most.
