I am an independent Speech and Language Therapist (SLT), providing assessment and therapy for children of all ages with speech, language, communication and literacy difficulties in the Bury St Edmunds area. Services can be offered at home, in school or at my playroom-clinic. I have 25 years experience of working with children as a Speech and Language Therapist, initially working for the NHS in North-East England, followed by 16 years as an independent SLT in Singapore. My specialist clinical areas are Speech Disorder and Language Disorder, including Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

To understand Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) first people need to understand language. 'Language' is a word that means many different things to different people.

One of this year's most popular resources has been this poster 'Language is...' It explains what we mean by 'language' in an accessible way.

Worth sharing with others but also saving, so that you have it to hand when you need to talk about DLD.

It’s DLD Awareness Day!

Developmental Language Disorder is probably the most common condition you’ve never heard of - it affects around 1 in every 14 children.

DLD is when a person has difficulty talking and understanding spoken language. It impacts on learning, reading, writing, social relationships and wellbeing.

When you see a child or young person struggling, think about language, and think could it be DLD?

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a difficulty with using and understanding SPOKEN language. The interactions with spoken language and reading are rich and diverse. Many people have many different opinions regarding the specifics. What we do know is that reading is hard for many people with DLD. They may have difficulties with decoding, but almost all then have additional issues with reading comprehension.

A significant percentage of children and young people who are struggling with reading may have DLD. For students who are struggling with reading, it is worth taking a look at their spoken language also. Asking them to tell a story is one quick way of working out if spoken language is a factor. If you have concerns, then refer on to specialist services.

A quick, useful summary of DLD and dyslexia is at https://www.banterspeech.com.au/dyslexia-vs-developmental-language-disorder-same-or-different-and-what-do-we-need-to-know-about-their-relationship/
