✨ My own little challenge✨
(Not yoga related)
So I decided recently to challenge myself and undertake something I have been wanting to do for a while now. I completed a 48-hour fast! My first attempt at a fast during which I prepared a 32-hour simmered bone broth to “break fast” and I wanted to share a little about the journey with you.
Throughout, I felt surprisingly good and balanced which I was not expecting. I did notice the occasional food craving, I didn’t feel unwell, which was really empowering. I did all the appropriate research and supported myself with magnesium, potassium, and a pinch of salt each day which helped me maintain my energy and hydration.
One of the things I was really excited about during this fast was the process of “autophagy”
What is Autophagy I hear you cry?
Autophagy is your body’s natural “cellular housekeeping” system. During this process, your cells clean up and recycle damaged proteins and old components, essentially rejuvenating themselves.
Benefits include: Supporting metabolic health, Reducing inflammation, Promoting cellular repair and longevity, Enhancing mental clarity and focus. Autophagy is something I’ve always wanted to explore, and this fast gave me a firsthand experience.
How did I feel?
Fasting can be manageable and even liberating, especially with mindful preparation. I went into this understanding my body, what it needed and what I wanted to get out info this journey.
Surprisingly I felt “ok”, don’t get me wrong I was a “bit hungry” but I found it perfectly manageable.
I have been at work undertaking a physical job, on less sleep than usual (delayed flight back from Gdansk) and I still found out I had reserves which I was unaware of! The body is an amazing tool.
I pre-made a Bone broth intending to eat after the fast and I simmered mine for 26 hours to extract maximum nutrients. I found this worked well after a few dates to gently open my digestive system back up again. Electrolytes are key! I didn’t want to be dehydrated, magnesium, potassium, and a little salt with 3L water.
Even with food cravings, I was able to push through, listening to my body and moving mindfully helped me stay balanced and on track! I toned down my physical exertion given my lower calorific intake but everything I did, I was able to do comfortably.
All in all not terrible experience. I felt a strong sense of achievement doing this and a high sense of achievement now afterwards. A worthwhile lesson given the benefits.
Remember, fasting is a personal journey — always listen to your body, and approach it with care and intention. I did a lot of research and have contemplated for a good 6 months.
Hope you enjoyed the read 🥰.
