Flu cases in hospitals are the highest ever for this time of year.

But there are things you can do to help, like getting vaccinated, if eligible, and taking steps to protect older and more vulnerable family members.

More than 18 million people have already had a flu vaccine this season.

Flu vaccines don’t stop everyone from catching flu, but they do reduce the risk of becoming seriously unwell, needing hospital care or developing complications – especially for older adults and those with health conditions.

If you’re eligible and haven’t had yours yet, it’s not too late to get protected.

Free Home Swab Testing for Respiratory Viruses

If you have a new cough, fever, cold or flu-like illness, you can request a free home swab kit through the national ORCHID research programme.

This helps identify which viruses are circulating locally and may give you information about the cause of your symptoms.

A kit will be posted to you within 2–3 days
The test looks for several common respiratory viruses such as COVID-19, flu, RSV, adenovirus and HMPV.

Flu cases are rising rapidly, alongside planned junior doctor strikes next week that will put pressure on hospitals. Latest figures show an average of 1717 patients in hospital with flu every day last week. Please book your vaccination now to stay well over Christmas.
