TWENTY THREE AND A BIT HOURS.

Olga De Polga - rising 4. She's starting to look less gauky at last but has a lot of growing still to do.

Olga had her very first proper "training" session today where we walked round my grass arena together. She really didn't know why she had to do that and after 2 circuits had had enough, she spent the rest of the (less than 10 minutes) chewing on and playing with the clip. (Three year olds can be very mouthy).
She didn't throw her toys out of the pram which she is quite expert at. Bonus.

She's growing up nicely but a late foal so we will just play at the tactical game of making it all her idea for this year. We will play with some obstacles once she has mastered some directional cues.

I often wonder at the many many 3 year olds who are going through their ridden gradings or being prepared for the youngstock jump classes while mine is chewing on string and spending 23 hours and 50 minutes of every day being a baby horse.

River found that she could be amazingly clever today. 😁

It's always interesting asking a young horse to do a bit of problem solving. Can't go left, can't go right. Hmm, up at the front then. ✅

In a day or two it will be her favourite party trick.

Mindful Equine Training - developing proprioception.

Interested in the opposite of Rollkur? Real training? Read this article by the late Master, Miguel Tavora: “We have to admit that it is not possible to school a horse without the shoulder in. La Guérinière stated that this should be the first and last lesson to give to a horse, Nuno Oliviera said it was the aspirin of equitation. We start with the shoulder in from the beginning and once the horse knows how to execute it, we make the descent of hand on the side of the bending (inside) to make the horse take the habit of keeping the shoulder-in in self carriage without the constant use of our aids being necessary. We even cease the aids, but we keep them ready to be back in action in case of a loss of balance or impulsion. One uses these principles and techniques in all movements and exercises that we require of the horse.”
