The Season They’re Not Here

Some people don’t feel the sparkle of December
they feel the empty chair,
the quiet space where a voice used to echo.
While the world hums carols,
they’re piecing themselves together
one fragile day at a time.

The tree goes up,
but so do memories
soft, sharp, relentless.
Grief doesn’t follow the calendar;
it doesn’t wait politely for January.
It settles in the heart
like a winter storm that never fully clears.

If this season feels heavier than others,
you are not failing.
You are loving someone
who isn’t here to feel it.
Let yourself breathe.
Let yourself break.
Let yourself remember.

And if your home is still full of voices and warmth,
let gratitude win.
Hold them fiercely
for someone, somewhere,
would give anything
to hold their missing person just once more.
