Back pain - busting some myths. Often people who come to me with back pain are worried that something has slipped out of place. Disc bulges are relatively common. But they don’t generally occur as the result of one poor lifting decision or that one time you sneezed really hard. Your back is inherently stable and is designed to move in every direction. ***Hyper mobility***

We all know that being flexible is useful. But how flexible is too much? Can we ever be too bendy?

I treat a lot of climbers with stiff upper back and shoulders. There's lots of exercises to work on this. But what about if you are TOO flexible. Is your party trick popping your thumb or shoulder in and out of joint? Can you wrap your leg around your neck?!

Well there's some food for thought in this post.

How much should you load your body after injury? Should you climb? Lift some weights? stretch? Rest completely?

Too much and the injury will not heal, too little and you are likely to re-injure yourself on return to sport.

Unless you have an injury that requires a period of total rest eg. a fracture, loading is important and should happen quite soon after injury. However, loading doesn't always mean lifting weights. It depends on your stage of healing, how strong you are, and how much pain you are in. Initially, it could mean for example, moving a joint through full range, stretching or doing some assisted movements.

I just wanted to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a restful end to the year. Thank you so much for your support throughout 2025 – it really does mean a lot.

I wanted to let you know about my Christmas opening times, availability, and a temporary change of venue over the festive period.

🎄 Christmas & New Year availability

I will be offering limited appointments over the Christmas period, but please note:

Appointments over Christmas and New Year are not available to book online

Over the Christmas period, I will be based at Alpkit, Betws-y-Coed.
