• SPACERS •

I’ve had a couple of requests about the use of spacers and as i mentioned the importance of them in the previous video….i thought it be useful to show you how you to use them correctly.

So why use a spacer?

• takes away the rush
• Allows control - easier to inhale low/slow
• Less likely hit back of the throat
• Allows different technique options - single breath or tidal breathing

Used with MDI inhalers - squirty ones like this.

Benefits - small - fits in handbag/satchel etc.

How to use -

Single breath method - inhale slowly and controlled. Hold for up to 10 seconds or as long as you can comfortably. Then slowly back out. Allow at least 30 seconds between puffs.

If your unwell with shortness of breath or you struggle to hold your breath which is quite common then tidal breathing might be for you. Better to get some of the drug in there than none at all.

Tidal breathing - In/out slow and controlled 5 times per puff of inhaler. Allow at least 30 seconds between puffs.

If there’s a steroid in the inhaler….be sure to rinse you mouth as it can cause thrush, ulcers and soreness in there.

Top tip - Clean it weekly - IMPORTANT to rinse your spacer in warm soap water, rinse and let it drip dry….never rub the inside to clean it as it creates static and will make the contents of the inhaler stick to the spacer and not go down into your lungs where you want it. Get a new one every year from you Gp surgery.

Please share with anyone that needs to see this.
As part of my appointments i go through this in more detail and can ensure your on the right inhaler for you and your lung condition.

Hope this was useful.

Any questions or comments let me know - see you soon! 😁 🫁

•INHALERS• Please share😀

ARE YOU USING YOURS CORRECTLY?!

The most important thing about any medication is that it suits you and does the job it’s supposed to.

If you’re not sure….discuss it with your doctor, respiratory nurse, pharmacist or other respiratory professional that can advise you.

The most common inhaler i come across is Ventolin and most people take this incorrectly as they breath in too fast!

My top tip is to take it around 10 minutes before you do an activity or exert yourself so it gets time to kick in as this can be more beneficial than when you’re already out of breath.

Ventolin is a reliever inhaler that works to relax and open up the tubes in your lungs.

Used mainly by Asthma and COPD patients….most of the time it’s much better to use it with a spacer….but a lot of people don’t.

So let me show you how it’s done -

* Clear chest first - otherwise your coughing medication back up again with your sputum
* Shake to mix the propellent and drug
* Get into a good upright position
* speed of inhalation is really important - slow and low…..so a long gentle breath in!
* Hold for as long as comfortable - around 10 seconds is ideal
* Always wait 30 seconds between puffs as the canister needs time to warm back up
* Usually better to get someone else to check your doing it right.
