Patella Tendinopathy (Jumper’s Knee)

What is It?
Patella Tendinopathy, often known as Jumper’s Knee, is a condition that causes pain and tenderness at the front of the knee, just below the kneecap. It occurs when the patellar tendon — which connects the kneecap (patella) to the shin bone (tibia) — becomes irritated or overloaded, leading to small tears and degeneration of the tendon tissue.

Causes:
This condition commonly develops from repetitive stress on the knee, especially through activities involving jumping, running, or sudden changes of direction. It’s often seen in sports such as basketball, football, and volleyball — but it can also occur in non-athletes due to muscle imbalance, poor biomechanics, or overtraining.

Symptoms:
- Pain and tenderness just below the kneecap
- Stiffness in the knee, especially after activity or rest
- Discomfort when squatting, jumping, or climbing stairs
- Gradual onset of pain that worsens with continued activity

Treatment Options:
Effective management focuses on reducing pain, promoting healing, and restoring tendon strength and function. Treatments may include:

- Physiotherapy: Tailored rehabilitation programs focusing on eccentric loading exercises to strengthen the tendon and improve function.
- Shockwave Therapy: Stimulates healing and reduces pain in chronic tendon injuries.
- Manual Therapy: Helps improve flexibility and address contributing factors such as tight quadriceps or hip muscles.
- Dry Needling: Targets trigger points and promotes tendon recovery.
- Biomechanical Assessment: Identifies movement or alignment issues contributing to overload.
- Home Exercise Program: Structured exercises to support long-term recovery and prevent recurrence.

Patella Tendinopathy can be frustrating and limit your ability to stay active — but with the right treatment, recovery is absolutely achievable.

Frozen Shoulder ( Adhesive Capsulitis)

What is It?
Frozen Shoulder is a condition that causes pain, stiffness, and loss of movement in the shoulder joint. It occurs when the capsule surrounding the joint becomes inflamed and tight, restricting motion. The condition typically develops gradually and can last many months if left untreated.

Causes:
Frozen Shoulder can develop after injury, surgery, or prolonged immobility of the shoulder. It’s also more common in people aged 40–60, and in those with diabetes or thyroid conditions.

Symptoms:
- Gradual onset of shoulder stiffness and pain
- Difficulty lifting the arm or reaching behind your back
- Night pain, often disturbing sleep
- Reduced range of motion in all directions

Treatment Options:
Early, targeted treatment can significantly improve movement and reduce pain. Options include:

- Physiotherapy: Tailored exercises to restore movement and strength
- Manual Therapy: Gentle mobilisation and soft tissue techniques to improve flexibility
- Shockwave Therapy: Helps ease pain and improve shoulder function
- Corticosteroid Injections: Can reduce inflammation and discomfort
- Hydrodilatation (Hydrodistension): A guided procedure that gently stretches the joint capsule by injecting fluid, helping to restore range of motion and relieve pain
- Home Exercise Program: To maintain progress and support long-term recovery

Frozen Shoulder can be frustrating, but with the right care, most people make a full recovery. If shoulder pain or stiffness is affecting your lifestyle, we’re here to help with expert, evidence-based treatment.

Greater Trochanteric Pain / Gluteal Tendinopathy

What is It?
This condition refers to pain around the outer hip, often caused by irritation or overload of the gluteal tendons where they attach to the greater trochanter (the bony point on the outside of the hip). It’s commonly known as Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS).

Causes:
GTPS often develops from repetitive strain, poor hip control, or increased activity without adequate conditioning. It’s more common in women over 40 and in people with lower back, knee, or foot issues.

Symptoms:
- Pain over the outer hip, especially when lying on that side
- Discomfort during walking, climbing stairs, or standing on one leg
- Tenderness to touch at the side of the hip
- Stiffness or aching after sitting or resting

Early intervention can reduce pain, improve tendon health, and restore normal movement. If lateral hip pain is affecting your lifestyle, we’re here to help with expert, evidence-based care.
