Healing often begins in small moments — being seen, being heard, being honest for the first time.

Some days in recovery are incredibly hard. You may not want to attend meetings, speak to others in recovery, or follow the steps suggested to help you heal.

But for many, it is the healthy fear of returning to addiction, of going back to that destructive path, that keeps them moving forward. That fear pushes people to take action even when motivation feels low.

Recovery isn’t always easy, but that drive to choose life over addiction is what makes progress possible 💙

A question we get asked frequently is 'What Are Some Long-Term Effects of Alcoholism?'

Over time, excessive alcohol use can take a serious toll on both mind and body. It can cause organ damage, including liver and heart problems, increase the risk of certain cancers, and weaken your immune system.

Alcohol doesn’t just affect your body. Heavy drinking can impact brain health, memory, and learning, and increase the risk of mental health issues like depression and anxiety. It can also harm your relationships, finances, and even your ability to work.

Addiction can take people to the darkest places. For many, there comes a moment of desperation, a point where they feel trapped, hopeless and even start to consider ending their lives.

But even in that darkness something inside can still fight back. For some it is the love of a child, a deep-seated will to survive or simply the thought that life could be different.

That moment of surrender, saying “I will do whatever it takes to get out of this,” is often the first step toward real change. Recovery begins when desperation turns into action and the fight to live becomes stronger than the urge to give up 💙

Addiction doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t matter what you’ve been through, what drugs you used, or how much or how little compared to someone else — so many people in addiction share the same emptiness inside.

For many, self-worth, self-confidence and self-love hit rock bottom. Life becomes a fake version of yourself built around substances. One of the most powerful parts of recovery is being surrounded by people who don’t judge you, who understand exactly what you’re going through.

Recovery is about rebuilding your identity and discovering the real you 💙

A question we hear frequently is whether inpatient or outpatient rehab is the better choice 💭

Inpatient rehab means you temporarily live at a rehab facility for the duration of your treatment. This gives you a structured, supportive environment with 24/7 care and removes you from triggers, making it easier to focus on recovery.

Outpatient rehab allows you to live at home while attending scheduled sessions at a clinic. This option is more flexible and affordable, letting you continue work, school, or other responsibilities while receiving treatment.

While residential rehab generally has higher success rates, outpatient rehab can also be effective. Everyone’s journey is different, so speak to us to find the best approach for your circumstances and goals 💙

Addiction can take away your ability to make healthy decisions. For many suffering with addiction, choices become centred around drugs, crime, or immediate survival, rather than building a life.

Years can be spent trying to “save face” while ignoring the damage being done to yourself and those around you 💭

Through treatment and support, it’s possible to rebuild trust in yourself. Learning to communicate, reflect, and make positive choices helps people regain control and start making decisions that support a meaningful, healthy life.

Recovery gives the tools to transform from the inside out 💙

Recovery starts the moment you ask for help 💭

The sooner you seek support and take it on board, the sooner your life can begin to change.

But lasting change also comes from within. When you start taking responsibility for yourself, your actions, and the impact you have on others, everything begins to shift for the better.

At Gladstones, we guide people to not only get the help they need but also to take those personal steps that create real, lasting recovery 💙

Secondary treatment, sometimes called aftercare, is the ongoing support you receive after completing a rehab program. Recovery doesn’t end when primary treatment finishes. Aftercare helps people build the skills and resilience needed to stay on track long term 📈

This support can include continued therapy, workshops to strengthen coping strategies, mental health care, dual diagnosis treatment, and other tailored services. It is designed to guide people through the challenges of everyday life and prevent relapse, giving them a solid foundation for lasting recovery ❤️

Many people struggling with addiction say things like, “I can’t live with the shame and guilt of what I’ve done.", "I can’t deal with how I’ve let people down."

Addiction isn’t just about substances. It comes with deep emotional pain, and feelings of shame, guilt and regret can keep people stuck, even when they want to stop.

At Gladstones, we support people through that pain with care and understanding. Recovery is about letting go of shame and finding hope again 💙

Recovery isn’t something you have to do alone.

One of our clients shared how they once believed they could just stop on their own. They thought recovery was only for people sitting on park benches, the stereotypical image of what an alcoholic looks like.

But addiction doesn’t discriminate. It can affect anyone. And the truth is, trying to recover without help often leads to learning the hard way.

At Gladstones, we know recovery works best with support, guidance and compassion. You don’t have to face it alone and you don’t have to wait until it gets worse 💙

One question often asked is how long does a detox last?

The answer depends on the substance. Alcohol detox usually takes around ten days, while drug detox can last from a week to several months.

Inpatient detox programmes often run between three and ten days, but withdrawal symptoms can continue for longer.

Detox is just the first step. It is the beginning of the journey towards recovery and rebuilding life.

If you or a loved one is suffering from an addiction and need help with a detox, contact our team today to see how we can help you. You are not alone ❤️
