Many congratulations to Ayesha Noorani on being named one of "Four Rising Stars Shaping the Future of Cancer Research" by Nature Index .

Ayesha is a consultant upper-gastrointestinal surgeon at Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) and a clinical scientist at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. Her research focuses on two of the most aggressive cancers - gastric and oesophageal. She investigates genetic changes in pre-cancerous cells and why these diseases are increasingly affecting younger people.

Ayesha says: "Some days cancer research can feel like an uphill battle. But at least you make a little dent on that cancer wall that we are all trying to chip away together.”

🥇Last Sunday's London Marathon raised a record-breaking £85,000 for Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust, including raising vital funds for Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital.

A BIG thank you to the 19 ACT runners — many who were running a marathon for the first time — with some strong finishing times.

One of the runners was Project Team colleague, Matt Allen, Director of New Hospital Construction. He said: “It was an honour to run the 2026 TCS London Marathon on behalf of Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust for the new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital and Cambridge Children’s Hospital. Many thanks to everyone who supported me and kindly donated."

"For the last three years, I’ve worked on the design and construction of the two new hospitals in Cambridge. These new facilities will revolutionise healthcare across the East of England and utilise the economic benefits of the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor. I will be now taking a break from running and avoiding stairs for the next few weeks!”

We're incredibly grateful to ACT and to every runner who took part. Together we will change the story of cancer with Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust - help make your hospitals even better.

The second award was presented to the Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital Patient Advisory Group (PAG) by the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, in recognition of its vital contribution to shaping the new hospital from the patient perspective.

The award was collected on behalf of the PAG by Fiona Carey, Co‑Chair, Sue Arnold, member and Elaine Chapman, Lead Advisory Nurse.

Callie Ansell, Deputy Operations Manager for Breast and Gynae Oncology at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was presented an award by the Sheriff of Cambridgeshire on Monday. She was given the award in recognition of her leadership in introducing self-referral to the Breast Unit.

The new pathway enables women who discover breast cancer symptoms to refer themselves directly to specialist breast services via NHS 111, bypassing the need to first see a GP.

The initiative is designed to reduce anxiety, speed up access to assessment and diagnosis, and support earlier intervention where needed.

Callie played a central role in leading the implementation of this important change, working closely with clinical and operational teams to bring the service into practice.

The High Sheriff presented three roles in total, recognising staff and patients whose contributions are helping to drive improvement and shape the vision for the Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital. Find out more: https://orlo.uk/I7f4R

Yesterday we welcomed the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire for a briefing, an important opportunity to share progress, vision, and impact to date.

The event featured a tour of the Breast Unit, a visit to the site of the future hospital, and engagement with clinicians, researchers, operational teams, and patient representatives.

With construction anticipated from 2027, Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital will combine world‑leading research with clinical care in a single setting, accelerating improvements in diagnosis, treatment and survival for people with cancer: https://orlo.uk/Og0CI

New research published in Nature Medicine provides the strongest evidence to date for the starting point of the majority of oesophageal cancers, the sixth most deadly cancer.

Research Lead for Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital, Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald, carried out the study with data from 3000 patients across the UK.

The findings could improve screenings and early detection for oesophageal cancer, improving outcomes for the disease.

Professor Rebecca Fizgerald said: "Cancer generally takes many years to evolve, giving us a window of opportunity to catch it before if develops into a life-threatening condition. Screening and preventative strategies can have a massive impact on the number of people who die from cancer, but if the link between precancers and cancer is unproven or unclear, screening programmes risk doing more harm than good.”
