Professor Charles Malata was featured on episode 4 of Your Body Uncovered with Kate Garraway, a docuseries on BBC 2.

In this episode, Professor Malata undertakes a complex immediate breast reconstruction at the time of mastectomy in a cancer patient whose cancer was shrunk by first treating her with chemotherapy. This young woman with an advanced breast cancer underwent upfront chemotherapy followed 6 weeks later with surgery. The implant-based reconstruction needed:

A) Skin-reducing mastectomy to mimic a breast lift
B)The use of a dermal sling to support the implant
C) Placement of the implant on top of the muscle (epipectoral reconstruction)
D) Total coverage of the expandable implant with a tissue matrix (ADM) thus utilising the latest available techniques in immediate implant reconstruction

🔹’MUMMY MAKEOVER’🔹

This young woman was unhappy with her breasts which had changed following two pregnancies. In particular she was concerned with their shape as she felt they had "dropped" as well as her ni***es which had not only sagged but were not facing outwards after breastfeeding. She was also concerned about the fat deposits on her abdomen which remained even after weight loss, and the loose excess stretched skin.

I performed a minimal scar Lejour breast lift (lollipop scar) and a standard abdominoplasty, repairing the 4cm gap (diastasis rect)i between her muscles. As a result, her breasts are uplifted and look fuller, and her stomach is now flattened and smoother, here pictured at 6 months post-op.

If you are interested in a breast lift, abdominoplasty or other cosmetic surgery, please visit cambridgeshirecosmeticsurgery.co.uk for more information about the operations I perform.

FAQ: Should I have an open or closed rhinoplasty?

A question that many patients who are seeking a rhinoplasty ask is whether the open or closed method is best for them.

This is always best assessed during consultation, however for an overview of when each method is used, keep reading.

🔹 OPEN REDUCTION RHINOPLASTY 🔹

This young woman had been increasingly concerned about the appearance of her nose, in particular she felt self-conscious about the nasal tip which she described as "bulbous". She also felt that her whole nose was "too big for her face" and wanted a slimmer appearance of her nose but "nothing drastic".

I performed an open reduction rhinoplasty, refining the broad nasal tip and making it more symmetrical, straightening the bridge of her nose and uplifting her previously droopy tip whilst also reducing the nasal hump. The surgery was undertaken using a v-shaped incision on the columella and a cartilage graft to support and uplift the tip.

Here pictured at 6 months post-surgery, she now has the narrower, more refined nose which she had been seeking and the scar on the underside of her nose is fading well.

🔹BREAST AUGMENTATION - ROUND IMPLANTS🔹

This young woman was concerned about the shape and size of her breasts which has become deflated, slightly uneven and sagged following breast feeding. In particular, she wanted to fill out the empty upper poles of the breasts and get rid of the large gap between her breasts which led to a lack of cleavage.

I performed a breast augmentation using 325cc Mentor Siltex round cohesive I silicone gel implants on top of the muscle taking her from an A cup to a DD cup. Post operatively, she now has the fuller breasts and improved cleavage which she had been seeking, here pictured at 3 months.

🔹GYNAECOMASTIA🔹

This young man presented with asymmetrical, enlarged breasts with tenderness on his right side. To rectify this, I performed liposuction followed by open removal of the breast tissue using an incision around the ar**la, removing 50g the right side and 1g from the left, with the liposuction volume at 200ml on each side.

Following surgery, the asymmetry has been corrected and his chest has the more masculine contour which he had desired, here pictured at 6 months following surgery.

🔹’MOMMY MAKEOVER’🔹

This young woman presented requesting a so-called "mommy makeover" after multiple pregnancies had left her breasts deflated, droopy and lacking their previous volume, as well as being left with a lot of loose skin around the abdomen.

I performed a ‘mommy makeover’ consisting of a lejour augmentation mastopexy (lollipop scar) using teardrop-shaped breast implants inserted under the muscle and at the same time a full tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). 6 weeks post-operatively her breasts are fuller, and the loose excess abdominal skin has been eliminated.

Professor Malata has reached 160 peer-reviewed publications in the international medical literature. In his most recently published paper, Prof Malata and his breast surgery colleague describe how they preserved the breast while treating an advanced cancer of the left breast, at the same time improving on the patient's appearances.

In selected patients it is not necessary to lose the breast in certain breast cancer cases. This type of breast cancer reconstruction is called a "therapeutic mammaplasty" or partial breast reconstruction by tissue rearrangement.

🔹GIGANTOMASTIA - BREAST REDUCTION🔹

This woman presented with extremely large, pendulous and uneven breasts (36H cup) which caused her severe back and neck ache, shoulder indentations caused by the bra straps and significant sweating underneath the breasts which led to skin irritation. The ar**lae were very large and the left breast hung up to her belly button.

She requested a significant reduction in size which I achieved using a T-scar breast reduction (anchor incision) removing 1100g from her right breast and 1286 g from her left, avoiding the use of free ni**le grafting which other surgeons she had consulted with had told her she would need to have.

Post-operatively she has much smaller and well-uplifted breasts with a more rounded shape, and her ar**lae have been reduced to be more proportionate to her smaller breasts (from a 36H -> D cup). Here pictured at 2 months post-op.
