The best way of running is the version you feel most comfortable in, whether that is Rearfoot (Heel), Midfoot or Forefoot. Forefoot running does not make you injury proof or a better runner than someone who doesn’t forefoot strike. There are lots of other variables that contribute to this. My advice is do what’s comfortable, there’s no right or wrong on this one!

I still hear this occasionally. “Glutes not firing” suggests a more serious issue such as a spinal cord injury. So the phrase itself isn’t incorrect but it’s often used in the wrong way. It’s often used in the same way as having “weak glutes”. Having weak glutes is fairly common but they will continue to activate/contract and keep firing. So it’s important medical, fitness and other professionals communicate the correct terminology. Because in this case, they are not the same.

I still hear this phrase. If they aren’t firing, it could suggest a serious issue like a spinal cord injury for example. So this phrase isn’t wrong as it can happen but it’s more often being used in the wrong way. From my own conversations with people it is being used in the same way as having “weak glutes”. Glutes not firing and weak glutes are not the same. It’s because of this that medical/fitness professionals need to communicate accurate terminology to you so there’s no confusion.

These numbers aren’t made up. Sets/Reps will change throughout the process as we look to achieve different things. If we’re looking to fatigue a muscle group we may set high repetitions. If we’re looking to increase the load on a muscle, we most likely have to lower the repetitions. Sets… well sets will often change. I like to increase sets when recovery is crucial to an injuries progression. 12 reps in one go might be too much BUT 4 x 3 reps might be doable! These are the basics I consider, there’s even more to it! Do you adjust your sets/reps for your training?

I’m starting a new series on creating tailored exercise rehab plans. This is to highlight the multiple factors that go into making them. There’s too many factors to put in one post so over the next few weeks I’ll give insight into what goes into them. We don’t just set exercises for the sake of it. We set them to get you recovered from injury ASAP!

I get this question a lot. This isn’t a simple yes or no answer, as it depends on the injury. With some injuries it may help to stretch. However, there are also injuries that can be aggravated by stretching. When injured, it can be confusing to know exactly what to do. Lots of information out there which isn’t always accurate or relevant to your injury. When we do our clinical assessments, we answer questions like this. It’s important that you know exactly what you need to do to recover from your injury and what to avoid to prevent it getting worse.
