A sapling grown from the felled Sycamore Gap tree has been given to the campus as a symbol of hope and comfort for patients and staff.

Wendy Burroughes, whose daughter Jess receives care at CUH for neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), applied to the National Trust for one of their ‘Tree of Hope’ saplings.

Jess had walked the Hadrian’s Wall path in 2012 to raise money for charity. On the walk, Jess encountered the iconic Sycamore Gap tree and felt inspired by its majesty. When the tree was illegally felled in September 2023, she was devastated.

Following the felling of the tree, National Trust conservationists collected its seeds and propagated 49 saplings, one to represent each foot of the tree’s height.

In her application for a sapling to be planted at CUH, Wendy explained that living with NF2, a genetic condition that causes benign tumours to grow on nerves in the brain, inner ear and spinal cord, presents many challenges for Jess. “Travelling and nature have been a very big part of her coping strategy...when I told her about the saplings being grown from the seeds from the sycamore tree, she was delighted.

“I will always be so grateful to Addenbrooke’s and the amazing staff who have cared for my daughter and hope that my application for this iconic little tree to go at the hospital is a token of my heartfelt appreciation.

“It’s for everyone at the hospital, to give them hope or offer them peace.”

The sapling was planted on Tuesday 03 March adjacent to the NHS 70 Garden, near the Car Park 1 green space, in a ceremony attended by Jess, Wendy and their family, along with Jools Buttimore, nurse consultant for ENT and skull base, who has been involved in Jess’ care.

Ahead of Rare Disease Day tomorrow, our Chief Executive Nicola Ayton visited the Cambridge Genomics Laboratory, which is the lead laboratory for the East Genomic Medicine Service (GMS), to hear more about how the laboratory team is supporting patients on our waiting lists and improving access to genomic testing for people across our region.

She had the opportunity to meet with colleagues including East GMS Operations Director Dr Amanda Clarkson, Medical Genetics Honorary Consultant Professor Dick Sandford, and Consultant Clinical Scientist Dr Isabelle Delon, gaining insights into the specialist expertise driving improvements in genomic services.

With the help of the national Generation Study, which Dorka signed up to during pregnancy, using whole genome sequencing, doctors were able to quickly diagnose a rare growth condition in baby Safi, allowing her to start treatment early and already make incredible progress. 👶💪

The Generation Study is using whole genome sequencing to look at the genomes of newborn babies, to see if we can find and treat genetic conditions early. This kind of genetic screening could be a game changer for thousands of babies with rare but treatable conditions, helping families get answers and the right care sooner. 🧬❤️

📈 Safi has grown 15 cm since starting treatment, and her outlook is now much brighter.
