Cambridge Global Health Partnerships (CGHP) facilitates safe, ethical and effective health partnerships between Cambridge and the East of England and low- and middle-income countries to tackle some of the biggest health issues of our time. The aim of Cambridge Global Health Partnerships is to support positive, sustainable change in global health through facilitating international partnerships with hospitals and health organisations in low and middle income countries. To achieve our aim we support staff and students of Cambridge University Hospitals and the local health community to make practical contributions to global health by volunteering.

Our latest event brought to life how our work is developing people and delivering global health impact. 🌎

A huge thank you to our speakers – NHS staff and students who are recent recipients of CGHP grants and ethical elective funding – who shared how their experiences have advanced their careers and supported the development of others. Their stories highlight how the health partnerships approach is helping to deliver sustainable, long-term change in global health.

The event also echoed a key theme from our new CGHP Impact Report – catalysing personal and professional development. We’re grateful to everyone that joined us including teams visiting us in Cambridge from Uganda and the Philippines – we hope you enjoyed hearing directly from some of the people behind the partnerships and the impact they are helping create.

Thanks to Innovate Cambridge for allowing us to use your inspiring space for this event.

We’re proud to launch our Impact Report, which highlights how CGHP-facilitated health partnerships are improving global health. 🌎

The report explores an important dimension of our impact – the perspectives and experiences of CGHP members and partners who are directly involved in the health partnerships we support.

The findings were overwhelmingly positive, with 100% of 2024-25 participants reporting they developed new techniques or approaches relevant to their clinical practice. Participants also reported significant growth in understanding of global health issues, expanded their role scopes and enhanced their cultural understanding.

Two of our long-term CGHP volunteers are currently supporting antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) and infection prevention efforts in Kampala. As part of CGHP’s health partnership with Uganda, Clinical Pharmacist, Chloe Aherne and Registered Nurse, Yasmin Boateng from Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are working with teams at Mulago Specialised Women and Neonatal Hospital and Kawempe National Referral Hospital.

Their placements are focused on strengthening clinical practices to tackle antimicrobial resistance particularly in maternal and neonatal care. They have been working with teams at both hospitals to deliver infection prevention training, central line care training, develop evidence-prescribing guidelines and deliver an audit of AMS on post-natal wards. We are pleased to share a few photo highlights from their first couple of weeks on placement.

Community pharmacies are the backbone of healthcare in many areas of Kenya, providing both over-the-counter and prescription medications for many common conditions - including antibiotics. However, the informal nature of some of these transactions and the limited resource for monitoring and patient education mean that antimicrobial resistance is a real concern. 💊

In August, Infectious Diseases Registrar at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and East of England Global Health Fellow, Eleanor Turnbull-Jones visited Kenya to collect data from 22 community pharmacies around Kakamega County. It was the first time that community pharmacy data on antibiotic prescribing had been collected in and is now being rolled out by the Commonwealth Partnership Antimicrobial Stewardship ( ) in other African countries. 🌏

In Ellie’s blog she explains why it was crucial to do the data collection in person, the valuable opportunity to present the results to more than 30 community pharmacists at the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya’s monthly meeting, and the learnings that are applicable to the .

What a week our health partnership visitors from Kenya and Malawi had! They spent time with physiotherapy, pharmacy, orthopaedic, audiology and infectious diseases colleagues (and more!) across Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Papworth Hospital, learning and sharing ideas that will strengthen medical education and training programmes, and improve antimicrobial stewardship practices to keep patients safe. 🫶

They also had time for valuable conversations with health leadership staff including CUH Chief Medical Officer Dr Susan Broster, Director of NIHR Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre Professor Miles Parkes, and Regius Professor of Physics & Head of the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine Professor Patrick Maxwell. 🤝

It's fantastic to see the commitment of and institutions to learn from and share knowledge with healthcare systems globally. Relationships that were strengthened in person last week will continue online as these partnerships go on to make long-term, sustainable and context specific improvements to better meet the needs of patients everywhere. 🌍

We had a fantastic day yesterday hearing the wisdom and insights from our outgoing East of England global health fellows and welcoming the new cohort for 2026. 💫

By working alongside practitioners in other healthcare systems around the world, these amazing nurses, midwives, Allied Health Professionals and doctors are bringing skills and knowledge into our NHS that will benefit patients everywhere. 💪

From improved cultural awareness to increased confidence, greater resilience to better multidisciplinary working, hearing about the impact the fellowship has had on them personally and professionally is always a reminder of just how much we have to gain from learning globally and the relevance of this knowledge to NHS England's Ten Year Health Plan. 🌍
