🧠 Tuesday Research at AJS Physiotherapy

Today’s paper looked at the influence of social support on patients with low back pain — and the takeaway was simple but powerful:

👉 Progress isn’t always about hands-on techniques.

Research shows that encouragement, accountability, reassurance, and feeling supported can significantly influence adherence, confidence, and outcomes, especially in persistent pain.

At AJS Physiotherapy, I stay up to date with current research so our care goes beyond just manual therapy. Sometimes the most effective “treatment” is:
✔️ education
✔️ reassurance
✔️ goal setting
✔️ support inside and outside the clinic

Because great physio isn’t just what we do with our hands — it’s how we support the whole person.

📚 Evidence-based. Patient-centred. Always learning.

⏳ Waiting for your NHS appointment? I get it.

A 4–6 week wait can feel really frustrating — especially when you’re in pain or your life’s on hold.
I understand, because I’ve been there.
Having worked within the NHS, I know first-hand how stretched the system can be, and as a clinician I truly understand what that wait feels like from your side too.

💙 While you’re waiting, getting started with rehab or treatment can sometimes make a big difference.
Early advice, guided exercises, and hands-on care can help reduce pain, improve movement, and make day-to-day life a little easier — even before your NHS appointment comes around.

🌉 Think of it as bridging the gap, not replacing your NHS care.
Just support, reassurance, and progress when you need it most.

If you’re struggling while you wait, I’m here to help.

🦵🏽 I tore my ACL. Thought I’d share my story from last year.

As a physio, I’ve treated countless ACL injuries — but experiencing one myself was a completely different story.

In that moment, I wasn’t the clinician. I was the patient — with the same fears, doubts, and “what now?” questions I’ve heard from so many others.

Instead, I committed to my own rehab plan — focused on strength, control, and confidence. It was slow, humbling, and far from perfect… but it worked.

This experience reminded me that rehab is never just about the body. It’s about patience, consistency, and trust — in the process, and in yourself.

Is this for everyone? Absolutely not. There are a number of factors to take into consideration. I discussed options with my consultant. For me it was going to be conservative management.

I’ll be posting my favourite exercises and experiences over the next few weeks. Stay Tuned 😀

❄️ Still reaching for ice when you get injured? You might want to think twice.

For years, R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) was the go-to for acute injuries. But recent research shows ice might actually slow healing, not help it. 🧠⚠️

🔍 Why?
Inflammation is your body’s natural healing response. Icing can reduce pain temporarily — but it also slows down blood flow and can delay tissue repair.

👉 What to do instead:
✅ Gentle, pain-free movement (as tolerated)
✅ Protect the area, don’t immobilize it
✅ Seek professional assessment
✅ Promote circulation, not block it

🧠 Movement is medicine — even early on.

📚 Bonus: The creator of the RICE protocol (Dr. Gabe Mirkin) has since said he no longer recommends it!
