It is not uncommon to wake up feeling disoriented or in a state of panic. If this happens to you, take slow, deep, long breaths to help you maintain a sense of calm or return to a calmer state. Once you find your breath, go through the steps in the post.

This technique is one of many options you could use if you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed. If this is something you struggle with regularly, and you continue to have trouble re-focusing or coping with these feelings, contact us on 01227469338 or email kmicb.umcpt@nhs net. We can help!

Trauma can manifest in various ways, and its symptoms can vary from person to person. It's important to remember that everyone responds to trauma differently, and these symptoms can vary in intensity and duration.

If you're experiencing symptoms of trauma and they are interfering with your daily life, it may be beneficial to seek professional help from a mental health practitioner. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and recommend appropriate treatment options tailored to your specific needs.

Imagine someone tells you, "Do not think about a pink elephant." What happens? Your mind immediately conjures up an image of a pink elephant, despite the instruction to not think about it. The more you try to push the thought away or suppress it, the more it tends to persist in your mind.

The analogy demonstrates that our attempts to control or suppress certain thoughts can actually make them more prominent and difficult to manage. Similarly, in CBT, individuals may experience intrusive or distressing thoughts, and trying to forcefully get rid of them often leads to heightened anxiety or rumination. Instead of fighting against these thoughts it is helpful to acknowledge them and find constructive solutions.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a widely recognised, evidence-based, form of psychotherapy that focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

CBT is rooted in the understanding that our thoughts and beliefs influence our emotions and actions, and by identifying and modifying unhelpful or distorted thinking patterns, we can improve our mental well-being. The main goal of CBT is to help individuals develop healthier and more adaptive ways of thinking when responding to challenging situations.

Safe place imagery is a technique commonly used in therapy to create a mental sanctuary or safe space that individuals can imagine and access when they need a sense of comfort, security, and relaxation. It involves visualising a calm and peaceful environment that feels safe and soothing to the individual.

This can be a powerful tool when you are feeling stressed and anxious. Practice visualising your safe space and let us know how you get on in the comments below!

Unhelpful thinking habits, also known as cognitive distortions or negative thinking patterns, are common ways in which our thoughts can become biased or distorted. These patterns of thinking can lead to negative emotions, increased stress, and an inaccurate perception of reality. By becoming aware of these habits, we can challenge and replace them with more realistic and constructive thoughts. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques often focus on identifying and replacing these thinking patterns to improve mental well-being and problem-solving skills.
