During my time travelling in South East Asia, I’ve often found myself in places where English isn’t widely spoken, and it’s been such a powerful reminder of how much we communicate without words.

A simple smile or high five can go a very long way here, allowing us to connect with others even when we don’t share the same language. It’s incredible how much meaning can be conveyed through facial expressions, shared laughter or body language alone.

This experience has really reinforced what we see every day in clinic: communication is so much more than spoken language. In our sessions, we focus not only on developing speech and vocabulary, but also on helping children use and understand all other means of communication that are equally important!

Top Tip Tuesday!

As the winter term is starting for some children, going back to school can lead to changes in routines.
For some, this is exciting, but for others who struggle with adapting to new routines, it can feel overwhelming.
Using visual supports and schedules, like this one, can make mornings calmer at home by providing consistency, helping all children start the day with confidence! 💙

Today is International Stammering Awareness Day!
Every voice deserves to be heard, and supporting a child struggling with a stammer in the correct way is super important. It's even worth a watch if you have a friend or colleague who stammers to ensure you are helping in the best way you can!

This is me and my sister playing the classic Tummy Ache game! I still have it and use it at work. Sometimes the old games are the best. It’s great for language development and I love using it with children who are struggling to say the ‘k’ sound - there are so many opportunities to say ‘yuck’ and ‘tummy ache’.
What games do you still have from when you were little that have lasted the test of time?

The school run is a great time to practice some new sounds and vocabulary with your child, particularly if they've just started school and the journey is new to them.
Once you're out the door (we know how hard that can be!), enjoy the walk or drive!

Point out simple things you see on the way such as:
"Look at that dog in the window!"
"Did you see that squirrel with the bushy tail?"
"That's a big, red bus."
"This tree is very green."

Don't worry whether they reply or not - just because they're not speaking, doesn't mean they aren't taking it all in.

If you are concerned about your child's speech, language or communication, get in touch to have a chat with our speech therapy team. You can call us on 01227 694740.

Understandably, some of the children we meet for the first time are nervous about who we are and what we'll be doing with them.

This is an example of a great support tool that a school has designed for children who perhaps have autism or worry about changes in routines. This particular school uses a social story to explain to a child what will be happening the day before they have an assessment with me.

It's easy to take communication and understanding for granted, but for some children and adults, a change or a new person in their life can feel overwhelming. My team and I take the time to build trust and to listen to the specific needs of each child we work with.

How has your child been getting on back in school? Have you received worrying feedback from the teacher about their communication or concentration?
Perhaps you are worrying you've done something wrong. Well, we'd like to put your mind at rest that it's unlikely to be your fault. Children struggle for many different reasons, and our team is here to help.

If your child's teacher has mentioned any of the following, they might benefit from working with a speech therapist. Speech therapists can help with so many areas of communication, not just speech and language.

Listening.
Explaining what they want or need.
Distracted.
Not making friends.
Unable to communicate easily with peers.
Difficulty in following class instruction.

We work with families across Kent, offering private therapy sessions, meaning you don't have to join NHS waiting lists.

Everyone should have the chance to feel valued. No one should ever be ridiculed for the way they speak. Stammering is simply a natural variation in how some people speak, not something to 'fix' or shame. Negative reactions and online mocking, like the recent case involving Jessie Yendle, show how much work still needs to be done to foster understanding and inclusion.

We are about to launch a new stammering training video with lots of useful ideas on how you can support a child who stammers - look out for details coming soon on how you can get access. Speech and language therapists play a vital role in empowering individuals who stammer. Our therapists can help build communication skills and confidence.

If you have a child or pupil who stammers, speak to them with empathy, kindness and understanding. Allow time to listen to what they are saying, not how they are saying it. Children and adults who stammer can become confident communicators, but they will need your patience and the right support.

Stammering affects hundreds of thousands of children and adults in the UK, and experiencing mockery or misunderstanding can leave lasting emotional scars and make communication even harder. By learning more and offering genuine support, we can create an environment where people who stammer feel confident to speak, share, and thrive.

If you would like to discuss support for your pupil or child, or for yourself, as we can help adults, please get in touch.

Is your child starting primary school in September?
If they are having any difficulty with their speech, listening or making friends at nursery or pre-school, they might benefit from speech therapy.

Give us a call for an initial chat, then we'll look at booking an assessment to plan speech therapy sessions.
And there's lots you can do at home too - practice built into your everyday life, because we know how busy parents are.

When they get to school, we want children to be able to communicate with, and understand their teachers and peers, which will make such a difference to their experience at school.
