❓ Newborn stomach size

πŸ’ Your tiny baby has a tiny stomach! When born, the size of their stomach is about the size of a cherry and holds roughly 5-7mls. Colostrum is perfect for your baby during this time as frequent, small amounts will be just enough for your baby’s tiny tummy! If formula feeding then remember small, frequent amounts too!

🌰 By day 3 your baby’s stomach capacity will have grown to the size of a walnut and can now hold roughly 22-27mls. Usually your transitional breast milk will start to come in around now or over the next few days. As milk supply increases your babies tummy will continue to grow.

🍊 At 1 week old the average baby will have a stomach around the size of an apricot with a stomach capacity of 45-60mls.

πŸ₯š At 1 month old the stomach now holds around 80-150mls and is the size of an egg. Again, frequent feeds are still normal and common! It is not uncommon for babies to have AT LEAST 8-10 feeds in 24 hours.

πŸ˜‹ It is easy to over-estimate the amount of milk a baby needs, especially when bottle feeding. Babies are tiny humans... like us their appetite will vary. Feeding responsively and watching out for your baby’s feeding cues/signs they’ve had enough milk will guide you.

Giving birth is a time when we may need additional support, such as having someone with us during labour.

A birth partner is someone you choose to have with you during your labour. They are with you in addition to the health professionals caring for you.

You can choose your partner, a family member or friend to be your birth partner. You can choose a professional birth partner such as a doula. You can usually have a professional birth partner as well as a birth partner from your family or friendship group.

You can decide not to have a birth partner, or you can have more than one. You should be given proper opportunities to explain who you wish to be with you during your labour. Your choices should be carefully considered by midwives and other medical staff.

No new parent needs to hear this.

Be kind, be compassionate, think before you speak.

There are so many lovely and encouraging things you can say to a new parent to reassure them and make them feel like they are doing a great job .... you may just make their day. πŸ’œ
