Café du Soleil in Canterbury is housed in a restored 18th-century wool store, situated beside the River Stour. The building was originally constructed in the 1820s using recycled 17th-century oak beams and posts. It was repurposed as a wool store until 1972. The building’s foundations were underpinned in the 1990s to prevent subsidence, using the same method employed for the Tower of Pisa.

Historical Significance:
The building incorporates elements of the 14th-century city wall, including reclaimed flints and ragstone blocks.

Restoration:
The restoration was partly funded by English Heritage and involved rebuilding the walls and reconstructing the roof with Welsh slate.

Unique Features:
The restaurant features a bridge over the river, an outdoor terrace, and a stylish interior. Upstairs, there’s a private dining room with original oak beams and posts.

Oh ohh ohhh! Did I mention the food is absolutely marvellous?!
