Everyone makes mistakes - thatās how we learn. But when someone experiences anger or humiliation, it can make it feel unsafe to try anything new. Why even try, if there is a high risk of feeling emotionally beat up?
Anger also incites a feeling of shame, which is different from guilt. Guilt says, āItās true, I made a mistakeā and allows space for the person who feels guilty to get into action to fix it. A behavior they did was wrong and can be corrected. Shame says, āI am a mistakeā and because that feeling is internalized on an identity level, (I am the problem) it promotes shame, secrecy and deeper feelings of woundedness.
So if you or someone else makes a mistake, try to replace anger with compassion, and frustration with encouragement. You may be surprised at how quickly things can shift.
