April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month đź’™

Taking part in bowel screening could save your life. Bowel cancer often develops without symptoms in its early stages, which is why regular screening is so important—it can detect changes before cancer even develops.

If you’ve been sent a home screening kit, please don’t put it off. It’s quick, simple, and can be done in the privacy of your own home.

If you notice any symptoms such as changes in bowel habits, blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, or persistent abdominal pain, please contact the surgery.

Catch-up clinics are being held for teenagers and young adults who have not had an important meningitis vaccination.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is holding walk-in clinics for young people in Year 9 and up to the age of 25 who have previously missed their MenACWY vaccination appointment.

Walk-in clinics are being held every Saturday (starting March 21) until further notice at the following locations:
- Barry Hospital, Colcot Road, CF62 8YH (9am-4.30pm)
- Maelfa Wellbeing Hub, Llanedeyrn, Cardiff, CF23 9PN (9am-4.30pm)

Young people aged 13-14 (school Year 9) are invited by GPs in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan to receive this vaccine as part of their routine schedule but sometimes these appointments can get missed.

The MenACWY vaccine protects against meningococcal disease type A, C, W and Y.

While rare, meningococcal disease can be very serious and require urgent hospital treatment. It can lead to life-changing disabilities such as amputations, hearing loss, brain damage and scars.

If parents of younger children would like information about their meningitis B and pneumococcal vaccination status - both of which are given to children as part of their routine vaccination schedule up to the age of 2 - please call the vaccination service on 02921 841234 (lines open Mon-Fri 9am-4.45pm). You can also book any missed doses with your GP.

We understand that many patients have been contacting us regarding the recent meningitis outbreak in Kent, particularly to ask about the Meningitis B vaccination.

In Wales, the MenB vaccine is routinely offered to babies at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and again at 12–13 months of age. Currently, there is no routine vaccination programme for children over the age of 2 or for adults outside of these age groups.

The MenB vaccine can be obtained privately for children over 2 years of age and for adults. However, individuals who are considered to be in an at-risk group may be eligible through the NHS, in which case vaccination would be arranged following advice from the patient’s consultant.

Further information is available on the Public Health Wales image below.

Thank you.

Did you know that antibiotics don't work for all infections?

They’re only used to treat or prevent infections caused by bacteria. They don't work for viral infections, including colds and flu, and most coughs and sore throats.
Stop the spread of antibiotic resistance – only take them as prescribed by your doctor, pharmacist, nurse or dentist.
