This gorgeous boy has SMA type 1 and has never walked. What a joy it is for him and his family to be able to experience the sensation of walking upright. He didn't want to come off! ❤️

So proud of this little dude, today at The Apogee Project we tried out the standing sling on a treadmill and standing sling with gaiters at his lemonade stall! It was so nice to play with him in standing without anyone holding him. Although he makes it look easy, he is actually working very hard at controlling his head and upper body as he normally wears a spinal brace. He was also engaging lower limb muscles and demonstrating some lovely pushing through his legs.

🌟This gorgeous boy enjoying his first time in our bungee standing sling! 🌟

💭What are we working on?...Although this cutie can stand independently for a few minutes at a time, he fixes in extension at his knees and so any stepping motion is very difficult without losing his head or trunk control - so the trunk and pelvic support from the sling allows us to work on active knee flexion building that quad strength and also his head control in a variety of planes of motion whilst also partially weightbearing! And of course, having fun hopping like little bunnies ...🐇

Honestly - I'm so truly grateful that I'm lucky enough to be able to raise my daughter and spend quality time with her AND have my own career but the juggle of work life and mum life is REAL ! 🫠

Ty Hafan children's hospice is such a beautiful place, filled with the kindest people who really do make dreams come true for these amazing children and their families when they need it most...What an honour it is to be a part of something so special. Paeds neuro-physio is about hands, feel, movement and instinct- this has taken me YEARS of experience to learn and develop... And I'm still learning now and will be until I retire!

It's learning when to give support (and where) and when to take it away. It's knowing when to push someone further and when to take a step back. It's the understanding of 'normal' movement and muscle tone and how to facilitate and manage it.

This type of expertise is only learned from years of hands-on experience and as much as I love you chatgbt, I'm afraid I win on this one 💪🏻🤣
