🎉 Happy 100th Birthday! 🎉

Today we’re celebrating a truly wonderful milestone with one of our lovely Home Foot Care patients - Kathleen as she turns 100. 💐

We’ve had the privilege of caring for her feet for many years — first in clinic and now in the comfort of her own home. It’s an honour to be part of her journey and to help keep her comfortable, mobile and smiling.

Wishing you a very happy birthday Kathleen from all of us at Foot Medic 💙👣

Tiny Toes 👣

This little one-year-old came into clinic with involuted (curving) toenails, which can be uncomfortable even at such a young age. Tiny toes still deserve expert care 💙

Our podiatrist Daria gently assessed and treated the nails, carefully relieving pressure and ensuring the toes were left comfortable and happy. Early treatment like this helps prevent pain, infection, and ongoing nail problems as little feet grow.

If you’ve noticed redness, curling nails, or discomfort in your child’s toes, it’s always best to have them checked sooner rather than later.

🔥 Not So Great Balls of Fire

Burning pain in the ball of the foot is one of the most common – and most misunderstood – problems we see in clinic.

For months she had been suffering with a persistent, worsening burning pain in the ball of her left foot. She’d changed shoes. Tried pads. Rested. Taken painkillers. Googled exercises. You name it.

Nothing worked.

In fact, the pain was getting worse – affecting her walking, her footwear, and her confidence to stay active.

After a full consultation and biomechanical assessment, we identified the real cause:

👉 A plantar plate tear

This is a small but crucial ligament under the ball of the foot that stabilises the toes and absorbs pressure when you walk. When it becomes damaged, it often causes:

• Burning or sharp forefoot pain
• A “walking on a pebble” sensation
• Swelling under the toes
• Pain that increases with activity
• Gradual toe drifting

It’s commonly missed – which is why quick fixes rarely last.

At today’s visit we provided immediate relief using:

✔️ Targeted metatarsal padding
✔️ Sports taping to support the injured ligament
✔️ Pressure offloading to reduce pain straight away

She left the clinic already more comfortable and is now being fitted for custom orthotics to correct the underlying cause and allow proper healing.

Forefoot pain is NOT something you should “just live with”

If you’re experiencing burning pain in the ball of your foot - we are here to assess, diagnose and get you back on your feet.

🥶 It’s cold outside… and your feet can feel it!

If your toes become red, swollen, itchy, or painful during cold weather, you may be experiencing chilblains. Chilblains are a cold-related skin reaction that commonly affects the toes and heels, especially in damp winter conditions.

⚠️ Signs to watch for:
• Red, purple, or blue patches
• Swelling and tenderness
• Burning or itching
• Pain when walking
• Cracked or blistered skin in severe cases

👣 Protect your feet this winter:
• Keep feet warm and dry
• Wear well-fitting, insulated footwear
• Warm feet gradually (avoid direct heat)
• Moisturise daily

If chilblains are painful, recurring, or slow to heal, it’s important to have them assessed.

At Foot Medic, our podiatrists can help identify the cause and provide treatment to keep your feet comfortable all winter.

Congratulations to everyone who conquered the Cardiff Half Marathon today! 💪

If your feet are now paying the price with painful blisters, don’t panic — it’s incredibly common after long runs. Here are our Top 3 Tips to Manage Blisters 👣

💧 1. Don’t pop it (if you can help it!)
The fluid inside protects new skin forming underneath. Keep the area clean and covered instead.

🩹 2. Use sterile dressings
Hydrocolloid or blister plasters cushion the area, reduce friction, and speed up healing.

👟 3. Let your feet breathe (when you can)
Change damp socks quickly and wear breathable shoes or sandals post-race to prevent infection.

If your blister is painful, large, or looks red and inflamed, it’s best to get it checked — infection can set in quickly after long-distance running.

🏥 At Foot Medic™ Cardiff, our podiatrists can safely drain, dress, and protect blisters — and help you prevent them before your next event.
