📖 It's World Book Day! This week, we were delighted to welcome Kevin Donaghy, author of Stories of Cancer and Hope, to Velindre Cancer Centre.

After being diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma, Kevin was inspired to bring people together through the power of storytelling. His book shares 39 personal accounts of cancer and hope, reflecting a wide range of experiences, diagnoses and moments of life that connect us all.

Since publishing in 2023, Kevin has generously donated copies of his book to various cancer centres and charities across the UK to help patients feel that they aren't alone during their treatment. In particular, he uses proceeds from his book to raise vital funds for Maggie's Centres, who provide holistic support and community for patients at any point in their cancer journey.

Copies of Stories of Cancer and Hope are available free of charge for patients in the Patient Information Centre (next to the Velindre Café).

We at Velindre are incredibly grateful for Kevin’s support and his commitment to helping our patients feel understood and connected during some of their most challenging moments.

We wanted to let you know about some upcoming works to the chapel on the Whitchurch Hospital site.
Velindre University NHS Trust became the legal owner of the Whitchurch Hospital buildings and surrounding land in November 2024, following a transfer from Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. Since then, the Trust has undertaken important steps to ensure the site is safe and secure and begin planning for its future.
As part of this work, we need to carry out some urgent safeguarding works to prevent further dilapidation of the Whitchurch Chapel. To reduce the risk of further decay, we need to weatherproof the roof and dormer windows and reduce water entering the building.
The chapel, and the wider site, hold historical and emotional importance to many in our community, including the Trust who has been a neighbour since the Velindre Cancer Centre opened in 1956. The Trust is committed to acting as a responsible landowner and engaging openly with our partners and the community.
To carry out this work safely, we’ll need to put in place traffic management and preparation will start from Thursday March 5.
This will involve a reduction of the lane width closest to the Chapel. Priority will be given to vehicles entering from Park Road toward City Hospice. Vehicles exiting the site (from City Hospice direction toward Park Road) will give way to the oncoming traffic. Please see the attached Traffic Management Plan.
The Trust has brought in professional advisers and secured Welsh Government funding to carry out clearance, safety and other works associated with preparing the site for disposal. We have worked closely with Cardiff Council planning and heritage officers as part of this work.
The works are being carried out by our contractor, John Weaver Limited, who have extensive experience in conservation works for Grade I and II Listed heritage sites.
If you have any questions, please get in touch with the team at contact.velindre@wales.nhs.uk

Roedden ni eisiau rhoi gwybod i chi am rywfaint o waith sydd yn mynd i gael ei wneud cyn bo hir ar y capel ar safle Ysbyty'r Eglwys Newydd.
Daeth Ymddiriedolaeth GIG Prifysgol Felindre yn berchennog cyfreithiol adeiladau Ysbyty’r Eglwys Newydd a'r tir cyfagos ym mis Tachwedd 2024, yn sgil trosglwyddo o Fwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Caerdydd a'r Fro. Ers hynny, mae'r Ymddiriedolaeth wedi cymryd camau pwysig i sicrhau bod y safle'n ddiogel ac yn saff, ac wedi dechrau cynllunio ar gyfer ei ddyfodol.
Fel rhan o'r gwaith hwn, mae angen i ni wneud rhywfaint o waith diogelu brys i atal Capel yr Eglwys Newydd rhag dadfeilio ymhellach. Er mwyn lleihau'r risg o bydredd pellach, mae angen i ni ddiogelu'r to a'r ffenestri dormer rhag y tywydd, a cheisio stopio dŵr rhag mynd mewn i'r adeilad.
Mae'r safle o bwys hanesyddol ac emosiynol i lawer yn ein cymuned, gan gynnwys Felindre, sydd wedi bod yn gymydog ers i Ganolfan Ganser Felindre agor ym 1956. Mae'r Ymddiriedolaeth wedi ymrwymo i weithredu fel tirfeddiannwr cyfrifol, ac i ymgysylltu'n agored â'n partneriaid a'r gymuned.
Er mwyn cyflawni'r gwaith hwn yn ddiogel, bydd angen i ni roi rheolaeth traffig ar waith, a bydd y paratoadau'n dechrau ar ddydd Iau, 5 Mawrth.
Bydd hyn yn golygu lleihau lled y lôn agosaf at y Capel. Bydd blaenoriaeth yn cael ei roi i gerbydau sy'n dod i mewn o Heol y Parc tuag at Hosbis y Ddinas. Bydd cerbydau sy'n gadael y safle (o gyfeiriad Hosbis y Ddinas tuag at Heol y Parc) yn ildio i'r traffig sy'n dod tuag ato. Gweler y Cynllun Rheoli Traffig sydd wedi’i atodi.
Mae'r Ymddiriedolaeth wedi dod â chynghorwyr proffesiynol i mewn, ac wedi sicrhau cyllid gan Lywodraeth Cymru i wneud gwaith clirio, diogelwch a gwaith arall sy'n gysylltiedig â pharatoi'r safle ar gyfer gwerthu. Rydym wedi gweithio'n agos gyda swyddogion cynllunio a threftadaeth Cyngor Caerdydd fel rhan o'r gwaith hwn.
Mae'r gwaith yn cael ei wneud gan ein contractwr, John Weaver Limited, sydd â phrofiad helaeth mewn gwaith cadwraeth ar gyfer safleoedd treftadaeth Rhestredig Gradd I a II.

We wanted to share with you the latest milestone from our new Velindre Cancer Centre build 💚
Work has started on the green roof on our new home. This key aspect is just one part of us building a benchmark for sustainable healthcare - low carbon, all-electric, and built to support a greener, healthier future for Wales.
A key commitment from Velindre was that the majority of the site remain green, with 60% of the development retained as landscape and just a 40% built footprint. Combined, the new cancer centre and its green roofs, the road, car park and the new Maggie's Centre make up that 40%.
The nVCC will be the first all-electric hospital in the UK, powered by renewable energy and designed to minimise environmental impact at every step - without compromising on the world-class cancer care Velindre is known for.
Our nVCC will deliver better outcomes through world-class cancer treatment, enhanced diagnostic capability and greater access to innovation, training and research.
Every design decision, every green commitment, every milestone like this one brings us closer to a cancer centre where patients and their families receive the very best care, in a building built at every step with their future in mind.

Roedden ni eisiau rhannu gyda chi'r garreg filltir ddiweddaraf o'n hadeilad Canolfan Ganser Felindre newydd 💚
Mae gwaith wedi dechrau ar y to gwyrdd ar ein cartref newydd. Mae’r agwedd allweddol hon ond yn un rhan ohonom ni’n adeiladu meincnod ar gyfer gofal iechyd cynaliadwy – yn adeilad carbon isel, sy'n defnyddio trydan yn unig, ac sydd wedi'i adeiladu i gefnogi dyfodol gwyrddach ac iachach i Gymru.
Un o ymrwymiadau allweddol Ymddiriedolaeth GIG Felindre oedd y byddai mwyafrif y safle’n parhau i fod yn wyrdd, gyda 60% o’r datblygiad yn cael ei gadw fel tirwedd a dim ond 40% o ôl troed adeiledig. Gyda'i gilydd, mae'r ganolfan ganser newydd a'i thoeon gwyrdd, y ffordd, y maes parcio a Chanolfan Maggie’s newydd yn ffurfio'r 40% hwnnw.
Y Ganolfan Ganser Felindre newydd (CGFn) fydd yr ysbyty trydan cyntaf yn y DU, wedi'i bweru gan ynni adnewyddadwy ac wedi'i gynllunio i leihau'r effaith amgylcheddol ym mhob cam - heb beryglu'r gofal canser o safon fyd-eang y mae Felindre yn adnabyddus amdano.
Bydd ein CGFn yn darparu canlyniadau gwell gyda thriniaeth ganser o safon fyd-eang, gallu diagnostig gwell, a gwell mynediad at arloesedd, hyfforddiant ac ymchwil.
Mae pob penderfyniad dylunio, pob ymrwymiad gwyrdd, pob carreg filltir fel hon yn ein dwyn yn agosach at ganolfan ganser lle mae cleifion a'u teuluoedd yn derbyn y gofal gorau, mewn adeilad a adeiladwyd gyda'u dyfodol mewn golwg ym mhob cam.

23/02/2026

Work on our new Velindre Cancer Centre has reached an exciting new stage, with the first sections of timber cladding now being installed.
We can now see more and more of the character and texture of the finished nVCC coming together ahead of our opening in spring 2027.
This marks a milestone for the project, bringing our already award-winning design one step closer to reality and offering a preview of the high-quality materials and finishes that will form the outside of our nVCC.
The facade is prefabricated, and by building key elements off-site, this helps the team reduce construction time and the environmental impact of the nVCC, which will be one of the most sustainable health facilities in the UK.
Designed to sit sensitively within the surrounding landscape, the natural materials will help the building blend with its environment while creating a warm, welcoming first impression for patients, visitors and staff.
The nVCC is a benchmark for sustainable healthcare - low carbon, all-electric, and built to support a greener, healthier future for Wales. It has been designed to minimise environmental impact as much as possible while delivering the world-class cancer care Velindre is known for.
Adaptability is also built in. The nVCC’s modular infrastructure can be reconfigured as technology evolves, supporting new healthcare models and sustainability standards for years to come.
We’ll share more updates as the work progresses. If you’ve got any questions, leave us a comment below or get in touch with the team at contact.velindre@wales.nhs.uk

Mae'r ffasâd wedi cael ei adeiladu ymlaen llaw, oddi ar y safle, a thrwy adeiladu elfennau allweddol oddi ar y safle, mae hyn yn helpu'r tîm i leihau amser adeiladu ac effaith y ganolfan ar yr amgylchedd, a fydd yn un o'r cyfleusterau iechyd mwyaf cynaliadwy yn y DU.
Mae’r ganolfan wedi cael ei dylunio i ffitio'n sensitif o fewn y dirwedd o'i chwmpas, a bydd y deunyddiau naturiol yn helpu'r adeilad i flendio mewn gyda’r amgylchedd, ac yn creu argraff gychwynnol gynnes a chroesawgar i gleifion, ymwelwyr a staff.
Mae’r Ganolfan Ganser Felindre newydd yn feincnod ar gyfer gofal iechyd cynaliadwy – yn adeilad carbon isel, sy'n defnyddio trydan yn unig, ac sydd wedi'i hadeiladu i gefnogi dyfodol gwyrddach ac iachach i Gymru. 20/02/2026

The contractor building our new Velindre Cancer Centre has announced the launch of the UK's first Construction Disability Inclusion Academy.
The initiative, based at the nVCC construction site, by Sacyr UK is designed to support individuals who have been out of work due to a disability by providing a clear entry point into the construction industry.
The academy is a collaborative effort between Sacyr UK and the National Diversity Employment and Advisory Service (NDEAS). The initial two-week programme will introduce up to twelve participants to the fundamentals of the sector. At completion, at least one trainee is guaranteed a position with Sacyr UK on the nVCC project.
The nVCC is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Wales and is scheduled to open in spring 2027. To ensure the site is inclusive for all staff, Sacyr UK has invested in an accessible lift system that provides access to all levels of the build, making it a fully accessible construction environment.
Katie Hathaway, Sacyr UK Stakeholder Engagement and Community Benefits Manager said: "With the support of Velindre University NHS Trust and Welsh Government, this collaboration has enabled us to develop programmes that create meaningful and sustainable employment pathways for people with disabilities. We are extremely proud to be leading this important initiative."

Mae'r academi yn ymdrech gydweithredol rhwng Sacyr UK a NDEAS (National Diversity Employment and Advisory Service). Bydd y rhaglen pythefnos o hyd i ddechrau, yn rhoi cyflwyniad syml i’r sector i hyd at ddeuddeg o bobl. Ar ôl cwblhau’r rhaglen, mae o leiaf un hyfforddai yn sicr o gael swydd gyda Sacyr UK ar y prosiect CGFn.
Mae'r CGFn yn un o'r prosiectau seilwaith mwyaf yng Nghymru, ac mae wedi'i threfnu i agor yn nhymor y gwanwyn 2027. Er mwyn sicrhau bod y safle’n gynhwysol i’r holl staff, mae Sacyr UK wedi buddsoddi mewn system lifft hygyrch sy’n darparu mynediad i bob lefel o’r adeilad, gan ei wneud yn amgylchedd adeiladu cwbl hygyrch.
Dywedodd Katie Hathaway, Rheolwr Ymgysylltu â Rhanddeiliaid a Buddion Cymunedol Sacyr UK: "Gyda chefnogaeth Ymddiriedolaeth GIG Prifysgol Felindre a Llywodraeth Cymru, mae'r cydweithrediad hwn wedi ein galluogi i ddatblygu rhaglenni sy'n creu llwybrau cyflogaeth ystyrlon a chynaliadwy i bobl sydd ag anableddau. Rydym yn falch dros ben o fod yn arwain y fenter bwysig hon."

A big thank you to everyone who attended our Winter Jambori!
We had staff members and their families alongside residents come along and take part in one of our events that makes up our broader new Velindre Cancer Centre community benefits.
Here are some pics showing just some of the little ones who came along to enjoy the free arts and crafts, including screen printing and stamping by the lovely team at The Printhaus.
There'll be plenty of other opportunities to get involved and meet the team coming up, and we'll share all of those here.
If you've got any questions in the meantime, then drop us a comment below or get in touch with the team at contact.velindre@wales.nhs.uk

Diolch yn fawr iawn i bawb a fynychodd ein Jamborî Gaeaf!
Daeth aelodau o staff a'u teuluoedd a phreswylwyr at ei gilydd i gymryd rhan yn un o'n digwyddiadau sy'n rhan o'n buddion cymunedol ehangach.
Dyma rhywfaint o luniau sy'n dangos rhai o'r plant a ddaeth draw i fwynhau'r gweithgareddau celf a chrefft am ddim, gan gynnwys argraffu sgrin a stampio gan y tîm hyfryd yn Printhaus.
Bydd digon o gyfleoedd eraill i gymryd rhan a chwrdd â'r tîm yn y dyfodol, a byddwn yn rhannu’r rhain yma.
Os oes gennych chi unrhyw gwestiynau, gadewch sylw isod neu cysylltwch â'r tîm drwy e-bostio contact.velindre@wales.nhs.uk.
