If you run out of your medication and your GP surgery is closed, you may be able to obtain a prescription at a community pharmacy under the Emergency Supply Service.

If you are unable to obtain a prescription without a delay and require your medication urgently, a community pharmacist may be able to supply you with your regular prescription-only medicines.

This service is available in emergency situations. We'd always recommend you submit a medication request with your GP practice 7 days in advance to ensure you get the medication you need, when you need it.

Measles spreads fast, especially in schools.

If one child has measles, it can spread quickly through classrooms, playgrounds and after-school clubs.

The virus can linger in the air for up to 2 hours after someone coughs or sneezes.

There is no medical treatment for measles - vaccination is the best protection against becoming seriously unwell.

If your child has missed their routine vaccination, it’s not too late.

In Wales:
• Children aged 6 years and under can receive the MMRV vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox).
• Children 7 years and older can receive the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps and rubella).

Two doses are needed for full protection.

Following the success of last week’s MenACWY vaccine catch-up clinics, further sessions are being offered this Saturday (March 28).

Anyone from the ages of 13-14 (Year 9 of secondary school) up to the age of 25 can walk into one of our clinics to receive the vaccine without having to book an appointment.

They are being held in the following locations:
• Barry Hospital, Colcot Road, CF62 8YH (Sat, March 28: 9am-4.30pm)
• Maelfa Wellbeing Hub, Llanedeyrn, Cardiff, CF23 9PN (Sat, March 28: 9am-4.30pm)

The MenACWY vaccine is offered to young people aged 13-14 as part of their routine schedule to protect against meningococcal disease. These catch-up sessions are for those who didn’t get the vaccine the first time around.

While rare, meningococcal disease can be very serious and require urgent hospital treatment. It can lead to life-changing disabilities such as amputations, hearing loss, brain damage and scars.

If parents of younger children would like information about their meningitis B and pneumococcal vaccination status - both of which are given to children as part of their routine vaccination schedule up to the age of 2 - please call the vaccination service on 02921 841234 (lines open Mon-Fri 9am-4.45pm). You can also book any missed doses with your GP.

Catch-up clinics are being held for teenagers and young adults who have not had an important meningitis vaccination.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is holding walk-in clinics for young people in Year 9 and up to the age of 25 who have previously missed their MenACWY vaccination appointment.

Walk-in clinics are being held every Saturday (starting March 21) until further notice at the following locations:
- Barry Hospital, Colcot Road, CF62 8YH (9am-4.30pm)
- Maelfa Wellbeing Hub, Llanedeyrn, Cardiff, CF23 9PN (9am-4.30pm)

Young people aged 13-14 (school Year 9) are invited by GPs in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan to receive this vaccine as part of their routine schedule but sometimes these appointments can get missed.

The MenACWY vaccine protects against meningococcal disease type A, C, W and Y.

We are aware of the increased concern regarding meningitis (MenB) and would like to provide clear guidance for our patients, along with some reassurance. 🩺

We have received a number of enquiries about the difference between the MenB and MenACWY vaccinations.

Both vaccines offer protection against meningococcal disease, a serious condition that can lead to meningitis and septicaemia. However, they protect against different strains of the bacteria. The MenB vaccine protects against group B, while the MenACWY vaccine covers groups A, C, W, and Y.

The MenB vaccine was introduced into the routine infant immunisation programme in September 2015. If your child received the MenB vaccine as part of their childhood vaccinations, they would not usually require an additional dose during adolescence or adulthood, unless there is a specific clinical indication.

In Wales, the MenB vaccine is not routinely available on the NHS for older teenagers and young adults. Families who wish to access this vaccine for this age group may need to do so privately. We recommend contacting your local pharmacy or a private vaccination provider for further information on availability. 💉

Young people should ensure they are up to date with their MenACWY vaccination, which is available free of charge on the NHS through their registered GP practice. Eligibility extends up to their 25th birthday. Our team will be happy to arrange an appointment with one of our Practice Nurses. 📅

It is also important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia. If you or your child develop symptoms, please seek medical advice urgently. Contact your GP or NHS 111 for further guidance. ⚠️
